100/1 Outsider Great Value For USPGA
|
US PGA Championship
Course: Southern Hills Country Club, Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S.
Southern Hills has hosted the final major of the year three times before in 1970, 1982 and 1994, as well as being the site of the US Open on three other occasions.
Previous Winners of the PGA and the course where the event was held:
2006 Tiger Woods, Medinah
2005 Phil Mickelson, Baltusrol
2004 Vijay Singh, Whistling Straits
2003 Shaun Micheel, Oak Hill
2007 Preview:
Not since 2004 has Tiger Woods failed to win one of the four major championships but he has just one chance left to continue that remarkable record. He has won the PGA three times before, most recently last year by a commanding five strokes at Medinah Country Club and, as with all the events he plays in, his presence dominates the field. However, Southern Hills may not play to Tigers strengths as he will need to drive the ball exceptionally well and this slight Achilles heel may just find him out.
So, if not Tiger then who should we go for? Southern Hills has a reputation as a shot-makers course with previous winners including Retief Goosen, Tom Lehman and Nick Price.
The course is a Par 70 which can sometimes count against the players who hit the ball a long way so it may be best to concentrate on those who specialize in accuracy rather than power.
Sean OHair has gradually been finding the form that made him one of the hottest prospects on the Tour in 2005 and the PGA can often be the tournament where players make their Major breakthrough. Another great ball striker who is in top class form at the moment is Hunter Mahan. A winner in Connecticut this year he seems to be challenging every week and this course should suit him well. Finally, former PGA Champion David Toms looks to have recovered from his health problems and has the experience and quality to be able to contend in this tournament once again.
