Villa are 0-2-2 against Wigan at Villa Park in the last 4 but I see them as favs with the new signings Fabian Delph, Stewart Downing and Habib Beye. Wigan should be weaker IMO after manager Steve Bruce and Valencia left and I expect it to be a difficult season for new manager Martinez.

Wigan struggled last year, have lost Valencia as well, adding to the previous losses of Heskey and Palacios, and have not replaced them. Villa good at home, Milner in great form in midweek and with a point to prove, Young is always a handful, Delph will be looking to impress if given the chance, Carew is always dangerous. I fancy Villa to win and win well.

Expect Villa to have another decent season while Wigan could struggle a bit this year in my opinion. Villa have lost Barry but Delph is a quality replacement in my opinion and given the attacking quality they have they should cause Wigan quite a few problems at the back. The away side have lost Camara, Sibierski, Valencia and Cattermole aswell as their manager and in particular the last three will ...

Aston Villa were a revelation last season and can continue where they left off. Wigan notoriously start slow and actually finished slowly last year with 4 away defeats. If the season starts how it ended then this is Villas for the taking. The 08/09 fixture finished 0-0 - a dreary mid-season affair. I would anticipate a more pleasing performance as this is the first match of the season. Also expect ...

Martin O’Neill stayed without his most influential player Gareth Barry this summer, but the boss managed to make a couple of shrewd signings. Habib Beye arrived from Newcastle to add some experience to the back line, while probably the hottest prospect in England, Fabien Delph was bought from Leeds. Latics had suffered a lot of changes this summer and that could be a problem. Roberto Martinez came ...

Im one that does not like the look of the new Wigan set up. They have lost key players including Heskey, Valencia, Zaki, Palacios and now influential midfielder Cattermole. They have brought in Championship players to do a Premiership job as well as an unproven manager at the Premiership level. We saw what happened with Paul Ince at Blackburn and it seems Wigan are in a worser situation.
