  Statistics

The first thing to appreciate about these statistics is that they are averages.  Consequently just because "on average" you are 200x more likely to run out of money than double your money at American roulette it doesn't mean you cant win in the short term.

In particular the worse the odds the less important a staking plan is.

Figure 1

If you play American roulette (which has a 5% house edge) hoping to double your money there is a 99.5% chance you will go bankrupt first.

The table below shows the chances of you getting to £100 before you go bust based on some different starting banks.  The chances of you making £100 first vary depending on what you start with.  However what is surprising is how unlikely it gets for you to make it to £100 if you set yourself any sort of decent profit target, especially if you are playing a game with a big house edge.

1% House Edge is similar to many blackjack games, although it is possible to find games with a lower edge

5% House Edge is for some of the bad casino games like stud poker and American roulette, where as you can see you have very little chance of making much money.
