Golden Boot StatsIn five of twelve runnings of the European Championships the hosts have provided either the top goalscorer or the joint top goalscorer. This can mostly be attributed to good performances from the host nation and therefore more matches played and more opportunities to score.
In nine out of the twelve European Championships the European Championship Golden Boot Winner has played in the final. This is a massive stat and is worth considering when placing bets.
Euro 08 Golden Boot Contenders
Cristiano Ronaldo - Portugal
Without doubt the best player in Europe at the moment and he tops the Euro 08 Golden boot betting but can he tranform his brilliant Manchester United form to the national side? Recent evidence shows he scores goals for Portugal but probably not enough to be the Euro 08 Golden Boot. He should be considered for each way betting though.
Lukas Podolski - Germany
Struggles to get in the Bayern Munich side and could struggle to get in the Germany side too. Bot a prolific goalscorer either, one to take on.
Miroslav Klose - Germany
Klose has a great record in these big tournaments and looks set to be up there in the Euro 08 Golden Boot scoring chart. The Poland game may be his best chance to score some goals but he should be expected to score five goals which would give him a great chance of being Euro 08 Golden Boot.
Thierry Henry - France
Not the same player he was at Arsenal and not the same player for his country as he was at Arsenal. France may not be at their strongest either so all things considered looks a poor bet for Euro 08 Golden Boot.
Fernando Torres - Spain
On some days looks a world beater and some days looks a shadow of that player, which one will turn up for Euro 08? Spain should go well this year and even though he is set to get his fair share of goals, will he even be Spain's to goalscorer? Possibly not.
David Villa - Spain
A very good goalscorer who has been playing well in the qualifiers. Main question mark would be will his club's poor form dent his confidence before Euro 08? It shouldn't do and he is a proven class forward. With group games against Greece, Sweden and Russia he will get plenty of chances and could have the Euro 08 Golden Boot in the bag before the quarter finals.
Luca Toni - Italy
Good striker but Italy are by no means a high scoring team which means although he may score most of Italy's goals, he is unlikely to score the most goals in Euro 08. Add to that his place in the group of death (also featuring France and Holland) and he may not get too many chances either.
Ruud Van Nistelrooy - Netherlands
Another proven scorer but another placed in the Group of Death. Should score goals but unlikely to have filled his boots by the time the group stage is over. |
Euro 08 Golden Boot TipsThe best bets for Euro 08 Golden Boot look to be Miroslav Klose and David Villa. Both have a good international goalscoring record and both will be contesting groups that should feature plenty of goals. Slight preference is for Villa as Spain should have an easier group but at the prices both are decent bets and can be backed each way at good odds.
