Group A Betting and Odds |
Portugal are rightly favourites to win Group A after several impressive major tournament displays over recent years.
Czech Republic finished top of their qualification group ahead of Germany and a reproduction of that performance should see them through here. A win in the opening game has put them in the best position to secure at least the runners up spot in Group A.
Switzerland would be highly unfancied in any other tournament but as joint hosts they have a significant advantage. That advantage might just be enough to help them qualify from Group A but they could have done with at least a draw from their game against the Czech Republic.
Turkey qualified for Euro 08 as runners up to Greece which doesn't represent the best form. Turkey are outsiders to qualify and face an uphill battle against two superior sides and the hosts, especially as they often rely on home form to qualify for these major tournaments. Their game against Czech Republic will tell us more about their chances after an expected loss to Portugal in the opening fixture.
Euro 08 Group A Betting TipsIt seems highly likely that Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal will win the group.

The hosts very rarely fail to get out of the group stage so it is worth backing Switzerland to qualify.

Group A Spread BettingSpread betting on the Euro 2008 groups is popular. In this index with Sporting Index the winner of the group earns 25 points, the runner up earns 10 points, the third place earns 5 points and the bottom side earns no points.
Buying This MarketThis market is pretty tight and the best play is going to be to buy Portugal who are quoted at 18-18.5 Sporting Index. There is little risk involved as they should qualify and even if they draw with Czech Republic they should beat them on goal difference and still win the group.

Selling This MarketTwo possible plays in this market. Selling Turkey at 3-3.5 is not a bad idea considering they are most likely to finish bottom of the group (earning no points) as they rely heavily on the advantage earned from playing in front of hostile Turkish crowds.

You could also sell Czech Republic at 12-13.5. Most people will expect them to come second but even that would only result in a make up of 10 points. If they fall behind Switzerland who could go well as hosts then they will only get 5 points and that is a tidy profit.
