Euro 08 Outright Index
In this market with Sporting Index the winner of Euro 08 is awarded 100 points, the runner up is awarded 75 points, losing semi finalists are awarded 50 points and the losing quarter finalists are awarded 25 points.
If you are planning on keeping your bet open for the whole tournament, to stand any chance of making a return your selected team is going to need to get through the group stages. If you are backing the first eight favourites then they are going to need to reach the semi final to have a chance of returning a profit.
Because of this it is probably going to be easier to pick an outsider who can at least get through the group stages.
Buying This Market
One side that appeals in this market is Switzerland who have a spread of 19-22 with Sporting Index. If you buy Switzerland in the outright index you stand to lose 22x your stake if they fail to progress from their group. The hosts invariably do well in these tournaments and with Czech Republic and Turkey in their group they might just shock a few people. If they make it to the quarter finals you will be guaranteed a profit of at least 3x your stake. Or of course you can look to close your bet early.
Another side who appeals for a ‘buy’ is Sweden. They have a spread of 15-18 with Sporting Index so they are rated less likely than Switzerland to progress. Sweden are a decent side, they beat Spain 2-0 at home in qualifying, and with Russia and Greece I their group they are pretty much competing with Greece for second spot (Spain are expected to win that group). With 7x your stake already secured if they get out of the group they look a fair bet.
Selling This Market
On the selling side of this market there are two sides at the bottom of the market who look worth taking on and one side near the top.
The sides at the bottom of the market are Turkey and Russia. Both relied heavily on their home form to qualify for this tournament and now that all games will be played on foreign soil they are likely to struggle. Turkey had just the third best away record in what was a weak qualifying group and Russia also struggled away and again had just the third best away record. The teams have spreads of 13-16 and 14-17 and with both looking unlikely to qualify from the group stage they should both finish with a make up of 0 points in this market.
France are another side worth taking on at Euro 08. They are in the group of death alongside Italy, Holland and Romania (who are no mugs) and it is feasible that they might not even qualify from their group. You could sell them at 35-38 and they have to make it as far as the semi final for you to make a loss. Should they fail to make it out of the group you stand to win 35x your stake.
Sell France at 35 in the Euro 08 outright index with Sporting Index
