Germany
The bookmakers may have been a little shortsighted in putting Germany up as the short price favourites. They performed with credit in the World Cup but that was on home soil and whilst they are a decent team the price is certainly not generous.
Italy
Italy are the obvious solid second choice. Very tough to beat but you would have to forgive their qualifying campaign if you were to back them. There is no doubt they will show up well and will probably look to grind out their results in typical Italian fashion.
Spain
Spain certainly have the talent to win Euro 08 but they always seem to disappoint in these major finals. They finally have the firepower to match their craft with two of the world’s best strikers in their side, Fernando Torres and David Villa and it is just a question of whether or not they can put all their talent together as a team.
Portugal
Portugal have Cristiano Ronaldo, probably the best player in Europe but they are not a one man team. As usual they are likely to perform with great credit but they don’t quite have the all round quality of some of their rivals. A semi final place should be their aim.
France
France have hardly set the world alight over the last year or so and they have to prove themselves without Zinedine Zidane who has been their best player in every recent tournament. The likes of Thierry Henry aren’t getting any younger either and it may be a couple of years before their younger brigade are ready for a challenge like this. Being drawn in Group C with Italy, Holland and Romania is no help either.
The Others
Of the rest Holland deserve a mention at a big price but that factors in the Group of Death draw with Italy and France so they face a difficult challenge.
Switzerland as the host nation could go better than their odds suggest and although they will struggle to reach the final, at the worst there could be a trading position when they are a much shorter price after qualification (should they qualify).
