Seven-card stud is a variant of stud poker. Until the recent increase in popularity of Texas hold 'em, seven-card stud was the most popular poker variant in home games across the United States, and in casinos in the eastern part of the country. Seven-card stud is also played in western American casinos, but Texas hold 'em is far more popular there. Two to eight players can play.

The descriptions below assume that you are familiar with the general game play of poker, and with hand values.

The game begins with each player being dealt two cards face down and one card face up. If played with a bring-in, the player with the lowest-ranking upcard pays the bring-in, and betting proceeds after that in normal clockwise order. The bring-in is considered an open, so the next player in turn may not check. If two players have equally ranked low cards, suit may be used to break the tie and assign the bring-in (see high card by suit). If there is no bring-in, then the first betting round begins with the player showing the highest-ranking upcard, who may check. In this case, suit should not be used to break ties. If two players have the same high upcard, the one first in clockwise rotation from the dealer acts first.

After the first betting round, another upcard is dealt to each player (after a burn card, and starting at the dealer's left as will all subsequent rounds), followed by a second betting round beginning with the player whose upcards make the best poker hand. Since fewer than five cards are face up, this means no straights, flushes, or full houses will count for this purpose. On this and all subsequent betting rounds, the player whose face-up cards make the best poker hand will act first, and may check or bet up to the game's limit.

The second round is followed by a third upcard and betting round, a fourth upcard and betting round, and finally a downcard, a fifth betting round, and showdown if necessary. Seven-card stud can be summarized therefore as "two down, four up, one down". Upon showdown, each player makes the best five-card poker hand he can out of the seven cards he was dealt.

Unlike draw poker, where no cards are ever seen before showdown, stud poker players use the information they get from face-up cards to make strategic decisions, and so a player who sees a certain card folded is entitled to make decisions knowing that the card will never appear in another opponent's hand.

8.35 we descended after a slight hiccup from myself when putting the tournament back into the lobby (one extra click and it was deleted Embarassed )

6 players sat in the final table with a very cagey start as ante's were paid, bring in's were made and raised. Who said small blind and big blind was confusing!!

The first casualty was current OLBG poker nights champ and organiser jwoody who was for the second time killed by 7th street as gutshot swept in the pot. Next to meet the blade of gutshot was zagreb, gutshot and hart now commanding the table.

Lady luck a.k.a Amy was the victim of the bubble as Hart grabbed gutshot's chopping blade and sliced his way to heads up with him taking me out in 3rd.

Heads up was a very entertaining affair with most of the observers on the edge of their seat as both players chip stacks yo yo'd. Then with a pair of deuces showing gutshot pushed all in only to be met by Hart's 9's to take 1st place in round 1.

Final Standings: Leaderboard Points

1st: hart0388...........6 + 3
2nd: gutshot_1.........5 + 2
3rd: rik_2502............4 + 1
4th: Amy01...............3
5th: zagreb...............2
6th Jwoodywoody.....1

(Points for all rounds will be as above, no. of players determines points available with 1st - 3rd taking 3, 2, 1 extra points for finishing in the money.)

Nice one for organising this event Rik 1st

I'm sure I speak for all involved when I say that we had an excellent time. It really made a refreshing change to play a different flavour of poker, I look forward to playing in the remaining 3 legs of this SHOE tourney.

Congrats to Hart and Gutshot on going heads up, but watch your backs in the next round, there's a rattlsnake on the loose and he's got a hankering for some FL Hold'em Win
