glad to be wrong about that one. at least no-one can accuse us of patriotism clouding our betting judgement Laughing

an england team winning the quarter final of a world cup by penalites, who would have thought Laughing

anyone expecting any more upsets after that result?

Guys i hope you doing mind me derailing the thread a little but i read a page off the Sydney Morning Herald that i thought was just gold dust after todays result, the page has been removed unsurprisingly.

From The Sydney Morning Herald

http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/pet...091364336.html

Quote:
NO, JONNY. Not tonight. Not ever. Yes, yes, yes, the English media have built you up as the Messiah of English rugby, who, just as you have so suddenly been resurrected from the ruined, can now single-handedly raise the whole English team from the dead, and beat the Wallabies in the quarter-finals in Marseilles. But you know that is not true! For nothing can undo the deal that was done with the Great God of Rugby! Let me remind you.

It was on the eve of the World Cup Final in 2003 when England coach Clive Woodward visited you in your hotel room to go over, one last time, your role in the English team's two principal tactics - the up, and the under. You and Clive were so nervous about facing the Wallabies the following evening that you thought a few prayers on your knees might help. And suddenly, direct from heaven, The Voice of the Great God of Rugby boomed.

"I will," He said, "grant you a win over the Wallabies, right at the death - even though that is against nature - but you will pay with a pound of flesh. You, Clive, will barely ever coach another winning team again, and will soon stand down as coach. And you, Jonny, will be so perpetually injured hereafter that you won't play another Test for over three years. And even when you return, you will never have another win remotely like the one I will organise tomorrow night. Do you both agree?"

You will recall that you and Clive both solemnly made that vow, sworn on the holy skull of your ancestors, and the ghost of so many defeats past. And so it was done. And so it has come to pass. And nothing you can now say, nothing you can now do, can undo that deal.

Go well tonight in Marseilles against the Wallabies. Even try to make a game of it, if you must. But do not, for one second, imagine that you can guide the English to a win. The best you can hope for is to do what so many English sporting teams have done so well over the years - lose with dignity.

France march on - the tournament is now set up for them.

Hopefully you backed them at a very good price as i suggested in my earlier posts.

But they could still be knocked out - there isn't much to choose between the top 6 sides.

A biassed referee can make all the difference - and france have had more than their fair share.

Best of luck - herbs

I'm glad I passe don today's matches, but I certainly didnt expect either England or France to prevail.

I have to say though, the referee's awful decision to sinbin McAlister was the key moment in the NZ/France game. It gave France a boost, and an advantage - and they took it, and with it, the momentum.

Although I thought it might be a strange game when I saw the ref was English Cheeky

(P.S - I'm not suggesting the ref was bent, LOL)

ok, who has spiked my beer with LSD? can anyone tell me what on earth the all blacks were playing at in the second half? this is supposed to be international rugby union at the highest level however adding to the austrailia v england match earlier it looks amateurish in the extreme. further, after some dodgy goings on why did they wait until the 78th min to even attempt a drop goal from worse field position they had held for the previous 8 minutes, losing by only 2? was the english ref deliberately trying to get us the french in the semi's (tongue in cheek comment - not literally accusing ref being bent lol), forward pass for the last french try, very harsh yellow card, strange french penalties.

herby said "a biased ref can make all the difference, and the french have had their share". very eloquently put. to be honest i was shocked england beat austrailia, however i wasn't shocked how they went about it and the fact they didn't look like scoring a try, instead defending and kicking penalties. but the all blacks v france game and the way it panned out is just not right Laughing

this tournament has been bonkers from the beginning, ireland nearly losing to georgia, france losing to argentina then beating the all blacks after being 10 points down at half time. england beating austrailia without scoring a try. portugal playing more attacking rugby than the defending world champions Laughing

what next? im tempted to lump on scotland to win the tournament Laughing

on a serious note, can england beat the french? and can they go on the gain revenge over the boks in the final after the pools drubbing? (unless this LSD hasn't worn off and fiji win tomorrow )

what does everyone reckon? personally i think it is the bok's trophy now but given what has happened so far who knows?

i did not for one second think that england and france would be playing each other in the world cup semi-final. i backed the aussies with the handicap today but i knew that i couldn't really lose. i no that because i backed the aussies i lost money but was so happy with england winning and the fact that i backed the aussies would have helped because if england lost by more than 12.5 points then i knew i would have at least won some money to help me get over the taste of defeat.
