So Michael Vaughan says it'll be naive of us all to think England players won't be involved in the IPL at some point. My response to him is it'll be naive of England players to think the IPL will want any of them to be involved. Ok Freddy & KP for the big names/marketability and at most Dimi & Luke Wright for actual ability to play top level 20/20.
When does it all start? And when do we know for sure which players signed up will be appearing this year (seemed to be 2 year contracts, or just an option to defer for a year?) _________________ Steve |

oooh nearly there, starts on friday, can't wait!!!!!!
to be fair to vaughan, i think KP has been lobbying him and all other england players to pile on the pressure, wherever possible.
KP will definitely play in the IPL sooner rather than later...after originally claiming that he wasn't interested at all. _________________ Corner vulture

When i heard the "bigger than football in the world" quote my first thoughts were that's the most stupid businessmans quote i've heard in a long time. But thinking about it more deeply as much as i can never seeing it getting close to football Stanford might be right in Twenty20 having the ability to have a multi-million annual turnover. India has 1 billion people i think, cricket is the national sport & they have a growing economy. So adding more of Africa and a bit more of Asia to current cricketing nations & the audience is huge. _________________ Steve |

Over 4.5m matched on Thursdays match Alfie I noticed... I think the only problem which some people may have with the IPL is that its shown on Setanta and a lot of people are reluctant to subscribe.
It has been great so far though, some cracking games, the games on Wednesday and Thursday went right down to the wire...
I don't understand why some teams don't take the approach when batting though in a one dayer, if teams can wrack up 200 odd for 3 in t20, there could be some mammoth scores by batting in this style _________________ Top Football Tipster June 2006

when you compare it to ghe "greatest club tournament in the world" the champions league i think it's quite capable of beating it.
The problem with the champions league in the knock out stages is no one wants to conceed in the first leg, the home team knows how important an away goal is so would rather go back to teh away leg with 0-0 while the away team play like an away team and defend quite a bit wanting the away goal but not wanting to give anything away!
20/20 cricket is like all the excitment and action you would have from a Champions league game between the likes of Man Utd and Barcelona if they were to both be attacking each other to win the game and it was only over 1 leg.
I'm sure the second leg will be more exciting but there's certainly a lot of people getting bored of expensive teams full of exciting players producing fairly dully to watch football.
I don't think 20/20 will ever be as popular as the premiership as it is not only a huge franchise but also by far the most popular sport in England. It isn't the excitemnet of the games that keeps people interested it is that everyone has an opinion or supports a team in the league.
The English as a whole certainly don't get as excited about cricket as the Indians. |

IPL has been exciting to watch so far, but can see it getting quite monotonous tbh. Far too many matches for my liking as a spectator (although as a trader, I would like as many matches as possible).
Yesterday, 214 was chased down, but IMO it didn't even involve an awful lot of skill (in relative terms). It was just blind biffing and even blatant mis-hit top edges were going well into the stands. When so many of these tail-enders are comfortably clearing the ropes, it's obvious that the bats they're using are ridiculously re-inforced, and the boundaries are far too short.
Best game of the tournament so far was probably the one last Sunday, which was played on a shockingly poor, crumbling pitch. Even though that pitch crossed the line in terms of acceptability, it would be nice to have a few low-scoring shoot-outs as opposed to matches where 200+ is chased down with ease.
Best matches we've seen in 20/20 history so far have been where the batsmen need skill to hit sixes, and bowlers are given a fair chance. eg India vs SA, India vs Pak in last year's WC.
Basically, I reckon they need to sort out the balance between bat and ball, there was already a huge gulf as it was.
Although very nice to see my pre-tournament predictions going according to plan _________________ Corner vulture

Kings XI Punjab v Mumbai Indians, IPL, Mohali
Punjab: (probable) 1 Karan Goel, 2 James Hopes, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Yuvraj Singh (capt), 6 Irfan Pathan, 7 Sunny Sohal, 8 Brett Lee, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Vikram Singh, 11 Sreesanth.
Mumbai: (probable) 1 Sachin Tendulkar (capt), 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Luke Ronchi (wk), 4 Robin Uthappa, 5 Abhishek Nayar, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Shaun Pollock, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Musavir Khote, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 Dhaval Kulkarni.
Teams look very equal and is a hard match to call. Whether Tendulklar plays will have a huge bearing on the outcome of this match. Not just his batting but also his captaincy because Harby Singh is not the best captain tactics wise. . I think i lean towards the Punjabbers as I feel their bowlers may prove to be the difference and hope that Tendulkar does not play.
Anyone have any thoughts on this match?
Edit: The early team news is that Sachin Tendulkar, Mumbai's icon player, who just turned 35 yesterday, will not be playing this match either. Good news for Punjabber backers. |

Good win by Punjab last night with Sangakara the star for them with the bat and their bowlers, lead by an exceptional Brett Lee and young Indian leg spinner Chawla, and supported by Pathan and Sreenath winning them the match with some excellent bowling.
Tonights matches are the both undefeated Chennai v Kolkata and in the other game Bangalore take on surprise packets Rajasthan. Anyone have any thoughts/opinions on these matches? |
