PostPosted: Sun Apr 16, 2006 11:51 am    Post subject: online gaming

Hi there everyone and anyone, I know this might be a bit of a weird place to put this in but I’m trying to look into online gaming for money and online gambling and I wondered if anyone would mind filling in an online questionnaire on it (that just takes a few minutes to complete). The address for the survey is http://ess.ntu.ac.uk/sutton/formfiles/ee206380/mickg.htm
I just need people who either play online games for money/ place bets or those who gamble online (or both!)
There is no obligation to complete the survey, but anyone who would be interested it would really help me out - any questions about it my email is at the bottom of the survey
Thanks
Mick

Hi Mick,

We get a fair few of these survey requests and without fail all expect our members to respond giving nothing back to the site. I appreciate you've said that there is no obligation to complete, but how about you providing a link to your completed thesis or even just the statistical results? I think there may be more interest in helping you in that case Smile Empty promises are not great either - we've had those before too. I know from my educational past that Psychology students need to do a load of stat analysis so please consider even just posting a link to pages/pdfs with that information.

Welcome to the forum too!

Hi there

Yes, sorry about that, I suppose you must get these kinds of things a lot. I can’t put a link to my thesis yet but I could try and put a link up to the statistics that I get from this study (although this might take me a bit to figure out as I’m not incredibly computer minded!! – I’ll have to speak to some people at uni). ummm… not too sure what else would be of any interest – I’ve put a few links to my supervisors previous papers around this area ( http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/109493104322820057;jsessionid=n3KdPUVA7ETcs6wYTQ?cookieSet=1&journalCode=cpb ) ( http://www.springerlink.com/(birtmf55bs1ace452k0rp13x)/app/home/contribution.asp?referrer=parent&backto=issue,6,11;journal,23,80;linkingpublicationresults,1:105582,1 ) – although so far there has been no published work (that I can find) on skilled games for money. That’s one of the reasons I am looking into this area. The survey was made using autoform (http://ess.ntu.ac.uk/autoform/) if anyone’s interested in that. Anyway I’ll try to get some links set up once I manage to get some data.

Thanks
Mick

Hello
I am a postgraduate student at Nottingham Trent University conducting research into online gaming and online gambling. I posted a while ago about my research and was asked to supply some information about it, as I understand you can get a lot of these types of request. I have carried on conducting my research (but mainly on university students) and would really appreciate some partcipants that are not purely from one specific area. Therefore if anyone would be interested in completing this survey please follow the link provided

http://ess.ntu.ac.uk/sutton/formfiles/ee206380/gamingresearch.htm

If there are any questions about this study you would like answering please contact me at the email address provided. If anyone would be interested in participating in an interview via email please contact me at EE206380@ntu.ac.uk

The preliminary work I have conducted on this area and the results I gained from student participation can be provided if anyone is interested.I am not too sure how to put a link up as they are not on actual webpages but i will add this later if i find out how to do it

Many Thanks

Smile

I'm interested but that link doesn't seem to work. It sits and tries to load but doesn't ever succeed. I wonder if the editPage bit should be part of the public URL? I suspect not.

PostPosted: Tue Aug 15, 2006 7:09 pm    Post subject: Final questions!

Hello,

I would just like to say thank you to everyone who has completed my questionnaire, it has been very helpful and I really appreciate people taking the time to participate in this research. I am still looking for people to answer some open ended questions so thought I would place them on this website just incase anyone wishes to answer a few or give there opinions/ views to be included in the study (I promise this will be the last time I pester people with this research!) Very Happy

Anyway the questions are provided below and so is the email address that the answers can be sent to.

Many thanks again

Mick

Here are the questions – if you wish to answer any could you please state whether it is online gambling or gaming you participate in.

1) What role does gambling/ gaming play in your social life?

2) How much of your online winning do you think is down to luck? (Do you believe that winning in online gambling/gaming comes from luck, chance, skill or a combination )?

3) How does it feel when you gamble/game online?

4) Has gambling/gaming had any positive influence over your life? If so in what way?

5) Has gambling/gaming had any negative influence over your life? If so in what way?

Hi Mick

Why dont we post the answers here then maybe we can all learn something

This is online gambling - particulalry sports betting.

1) What role does gambling/ gaming play in your social life? Very little - I have gambled for fun in the past but now even if I was to go horse racing or greyhound racing I wouldnt place any fun/social bets - if I was to have a bet which wasnt well thought out then I would be very upset with myself regardless of whether it won or lost. The exception would be if I went for a night out at the casino/bingo when I might allow myself a set amount to play with and would be quite happy to lose that amount in the form of entertainment - I would view this form as gambling as different as I dont believe there is any skill involved.

2) How much of your online winning do you think is down to luck? (Do you believe that winning in online gambling/gaming comes from luck, chance, skill or a combination )? Very little over the long term. Any one off event is effected by a degree of luck but there are ways to limit the influence of luck over the long term. Winning from online gambling (sports) is much more down to discipline, knowledge and skill rather than luck.

3) How does it feel when you gamble/game online? When I first started gambling I used to get a buzz - I was excited about the prospect of winning/risk of losing - Ive managed to limit that and I think to be successful at gambling you need to limit the emotional attachment to a bet.

4) Has gambling/gaming had any positive influence over your life? If so in what way? Yes its gained me possibly the best job in the World.

5) Has gambling/gaming had any negative influence over your life? If so in what way? Nope - not on mine directly but Ive seen it effect other peoples lives in a very negative way.
