Teams win World Cups, not individuals.
That's the main reason why England didn't win the 2006 World Cup.
England has 11 extremely talented individuals but, at the moment, they do not gel well as a team & often look disjointed in both defense & attack.
If McClaren can get these players playing well as a team & gets the best out of every player in a performance & positional sense, then England have a strong chance of winning Euro 2008.
If not, then England win underachieve yet again. _________________ 'The next best thing to winning at gambling is losing at gambling!'

IMO here's a few pointers for McLaren to consider in the build up to Euro 2008.
1) More friendlies. England play the least amount of friendlies in the world and iot shows when we play in major tournaments. There is never a plan B, nevermind a plan C.
2) More friendlies means more experience to your squad. Outside of the 1st XI England are lacking International experience and it's down to the number of friendlies we play and Svens reluctance to drop his golden boys.
3) No more square pegs in round holes.e.g Carragher in DM position when we have 4 players odf that ilk in the squad. Rooney up front on his own or stuck on the right hand side. It never works and a country with the footballin g population of England should not be playing International players out position.
4) Find some competition for Robinson. He has it easy in that position and the competition for the Jersey is lacking. His rivals are James (too many mistakes, too many chances), Carson (needs club experience before he can make the step up), Kirkland (too injury prone) & Green (who will spending another season in the Championship).
5) Either find a system early on that suits both Gerrard & Lampard or relegate one of them to the bench for the sake on the team.
6) This is the most important for me - Start playing with a bit of pace. The English way. Under Erikkson we slowed down to near walking pace and it was painful to watch. We gave teams time to compose their defences against us when we were attacking and we suffered for it. _________________ "I think one of his greatest moments was when he broke wind loudly at the Crucible and then turned to the audience and said: "Who did that?"' - Bill Werbeniuk [Legend] |

The excuse I dislike most is the "it was too hot" excuse, for a start, they trained in Portugal which should have adequetely prepared them for the heat, secondly, there were other countries there from climates similar to in England but none of them complained about the heat and used that as their excuse.
If the next world cup is in Africa then we dont stand a chance if this is the real reason why England are so poor. |
