Was thinking that the 3rd place play off should see goals.
2.2 for over 2.5 goals
Germany will want to go out with a bang, and Portugal will want
To finally play some football.
Last 4, WC 3rd place play offs have had goals.
S KOREA v TURKEY 2-3
Croatia v Netherlands 2-1
Sweden v Bulgaria 4-0
Italy v England 2-1
Thoughts? |

| Certainly good odds if both teams can pick themselves up and are motivated. |

| I guess Klose will be looking to score to lock down the golden boot & his team mates may well be trying to help him - so him to be an anytime scorer might be worth a shout too depending on the odds |

| Klose is 9/2 for 1st/last goal. You usually get a quarter of that for anytime scorer. He should have the top scorer sewn up, barring 2 Henry goals or a Toni hatrick. |

with the pressure off there may well be a flood of goals, defenders going forward without too much concern etc, klose was mentioned above to cement his claims but interestingly podolski would need only 2 to tie if klose doesnt score and at 33/1 there may be a small stakes value as the pair have linked up well and seem unselfish in front of goal. podolski is younger aswell and may have that extra yard of pace?! _________________ top rugby tipster april 2007 |

My only thought with regard to this game is that after the disappointment of losing to Italy on Tuesday night, Klinsmann will probably tell the players to go out and ensure 3rd spot in order to say 'thank you' to the German supporters for getting behind their team throughout the tournament.
However, as this is ultimately the one game that neither team wanted to play in I'm probably going to leave my money in my pocket for this one until I've seen the how the teams line-up. _________________ FAC51 The Hacienda...back in the day, it's where it all started |

| I agree with you Jimny- both teams will obviously want to win for a little bit of Pride and to have Portugal priced at 4/1 is ridiculous for a match like this. |

Think I'm gonna join you PartickThistleYaBass in backing the >2.5 goals.
Here are the 3rd place playoffs over time
1930 Not held
1934 Germany 3-2 Austria
1938 Brazil 4-2 Sweden
1950 Not held
1954 Austria 3-1 Uruguay
1958 France 6-3 Germany
1962 Chile 1-0 Yugoslavia
1966 Portugal 2-1 Soviet Union
1970 Germany 1-0 Uruguay
1974 Poland 1-0 Brazil
1978 Brazil 2-1 Italy
1982 Poland 3-2 France
1986 France 4-2 Belgium
1990 Italy 2-1 England
1994 Sweden 4-0 Bulgaria
1998 Croatia 2-1 Netherlands
2002 Turkey 3-2 South Korea
Analysis
- 12 out of 15 matches >2.5 goals
- 8 out of 8 All-European matches >2.5 goals
- 2 out of 3 hosts appearing in this match have won.
- Germany won 2 out of 3 matches
- Portugal won on their only appearance in the match.
- In 5 of the last 6 matches the winners have been winning at half time.
- In the last 3 matches 11 out of the 12 goals have been scored in the 1st half.
- Only 1 match has finished a draw after 90 mins going to extra-time.
* In 13 out of 15 World Cup tournaments the Top socrers have scored 6 or more goals including all since 1962. Klose has 5 and is the most likely to keep this tradition going.
On this basis my bets tonight will be
Germany (Half-time) - 2.5 @ Stan James
Germany/Germany - 2.88 @ Bet365
* Klose (Anytime Goalscorer) - 2.5 @ Coral
Half with most goals (First) - 3.25 @ Stan James
>2.5 goals - 2.2 @ Pinnacle

well i agree with what levvy says about, the thank-you to the german fans, however i agree with matt that the price of 4/1 is to big for a game like this, think Germany will edge it, also could be an interesting game, surely they cant get any worse than the last, say 14 games, think the portuguese will score, so would fancy +2.5 as KK's stats have shown, nice one m8
over+2.5
Germany, actually missed out on the 1.8, there now 1.73 _________________ Challenge Winners for August

Shall keep an eye on the team sheet then before placing my bets. Ballack is out for definate, Carvalho is banned for Portugal.
edit: Just reading German defenders Mertsacker and Friedrich also struggling to make the game.
I'd still wait for teamsheets but Klose has been passed fit and should play tonight. _________________ "I think one of his greatest moments was when he broke wind loudly at the Crucible and then turned to the audience and said: "Who did that?"' - Bill Werbeniuk [Legend] |

I'm on Germany AH -1 @ 2.8, as they will want to prove their worth to the fans and Scolari has already said the match is rubbish!
Also on over 2.5 goals @ 4.1 - Hoping to Lay off after two goals in first 30 mins |

The general consensus seems to be that the game between Germany and Portugal will be a bit of a goalfest, with Germany flying forward and Portugal catching the hosts weakened defence on the break. The idea seems to be that with the pressure off, both teams will put on their happy face and entertain us royally.
That may well be the case and I hope it is. However, I'm not totally convinced.
Whilst Germany have been the perfect hosts for this party, Portugal have been the uncle that nobody likes. The one who gets drunk and tries to start a fight with everybody. The question is what will be their attitude to having their pint spilled by France?
Portugal haven't struck me as potential party animals, so are they going to start now or are they going to take the opportunity to metaphorically 'stick one on' the hosts?
I hope I'm wrong, but I can see this being a bitty, niggly affair with plenty of diving and imaginary card waving - so I'm banking on the referee doing some card waving of his own:-
