Very simple question to answer.
in this order
1) hard work and research
2) patience
3) discipline
4) luck
5) strategies
and your original question...

Certainly number one is by far the most important factor, without hard work you will find very little return
You reap what you sow

Like most things in life, the more you know the better you become at something. Read, look, listen, study and then repeat all of those.
Remember you will never win every time you place a bet and you will be wrong lots of times. As long as you are right sometimes and the prices of those bets are big enough you will win. |

I would say that the most important point to to take into account when placing a bet is to take the gamble out of gambling. Whatever bet you place needs to have some value in it - Therefore a lot of the things you mention come in to play at this point.
Hard work and research to find the value
Discipline to only bet value
Patience to wait for a value bet to show up
and so on.
There only two occasions when you do not need value in your bet, one is when you don't ever intend to make money from betting and secondly you only ever bet on winners - Let me know if you manage to achieve the second!

Finding VALUE is the best system I know.
A system is no good without DISCIPLINE
LUCK is important, but luck seems to balance itself out over time.
Punting is always a gamble and don't let the system-heads convince you otherwise. But trading (preferably pre-event, but always based on a good value call) is the best form of "gambling" I have found in the last 47 years. |

One point I would like to make about value bets is your interpretation of what is value.
You might say that getting 100/1 for Derby to beat Man U is Value, but would you back Derby??? I wouldn't.
You still have to be confident in your selection before you even look at value. _________________ Most Consistent Profit Position #5 - July 2007

imo, arrogance in betting is bad. Nothing is a 100% sure-shot, and trying to convince someone else or yourself can be a fatal mistake. I am sorry to bring this up, but I noticed you posted this in the Systems sub-forum:

looks like you system didn't work laddiespoker
i think u lost at least 4 of your bets shown above. I'll give you a propertip, newcastle beating pompey pays 9/4 or 5/2 |
I think it is considerate of you to reply to other posts, but please refrain from making them derogatory. I wanted to highlight this since Newcastle failed to win today, and your proper tip failed.
I apologise to anyone who might think I am having a go here, but my point is that if you bet (and not gamble), one can try to be quite certain, but nothing is 100% certain.
Its good to see that people are looking out for pointers from experienced tipsters, but try and do the same for others rather than handing out 'proper tips'! _________________ Numbers and me, Its a love-hate relationship. I love them, they hate me! |

definetly patience and one other thing i have found, a good staking plan does not make a bad system profitable. _________________ Now Reviewing betting systems to see which ones work and which ones dont
