Perhaps a very trivial topic, but important to address.

How do people normally bet for horse-racing?

1. Short priced, Win only?
2. Short priced, ew?
3. Mid-priced, Win only?
4. Mid-priced, ew? (To get the stake back if the horse places)
5. Big-prized, win only?
6. Big-prized, ew?

I know some of the answers won't be as black and white, but I hate to back a horse to win @ 2/1, and then see it placed. Similarly, would it be good to back a horse @ 20/1 on Bet365 (ew), and miss out 25/1 on Betfair (win only)?

Do people follow any particular strategies?

Prince,

I very rarely bet on horses these days but if I do its Lay or back place only.

Cheers for the response donkey.

I haven't tried Lay, but I am sure it is something that needs more perseverance than simple betting. As for placing, do you look for sure-shots or outside options at good odds (greater than evens)?

Would also love more responses on this Smile

Prince,

Hi, laying can be a very serious way of betting but you do need to fully understand the liabilities that can be involved for a relatively small return % wise. e.g if you Lay a 2/1 shot for 10 points you stand to lose 20 points to win 10 (9.5 points after comm) There is a whole section on it in the betting school and loads about it throughout the forum threads.

Place betting for me is just any horse I consider will almost definitely finish in the places. It could be a 1.2 value bet for an odds on, or anything bigger usually around 2.0, 2.7, and I was looking at placing one yesterday to finish in the first three @ 9.8. Also as Betfair place terms do not change with N/R's there was a 6 horse race yesterday and they were paying out on 3 places (obviously the odds reflect this).

I say a 1.2 value bet on an odds on shot because yesterday a horse went off odds on but I thought it was far too short as it was clearly a race between two of the field but I couldn't pick the out and out winner with any certainty, so i backed them both in the place market and they finished 1st and 2nd with the 1.2 shot 2nd. this is rare and is not a strategy that a lot of people agree with but it works for me and thats all I care about. There are many different betting strategies its up to the individual which one or more they choose. Place betting on horses is similar to podium betting on F1 the odds for the best three or 4 are low but whats the possibility of it not happening.

There is a certain Jockey/Trainer Combo that I follow almost blindly (but with a few strict rules) that wins regularly in the place market, under certain conditions, the low odds make it a steady drip strategy but combined with other strategies helps to make steady bank growth.
