Would it be possible to open a thread which deals with the problems that arise when betting? i.e. letting emotions cloud your judgement, chasing wins when your down and the dreaded losing streak.
As a reasonable poker player i am all to aware of the need to surpress any emotion, because it leads to empty pockets and thats a fact, which also leads to chasing the win.
Having said that i find it hard to "practice what i preach" when it comes to the horses and often find myself betting more than i usually would if i've had a win, when i should have cashed in and left myself a bit to play with.
I'm not a pro gambler and never will be because i like my multi bets and find it hard to bet singles alone which is the best way to make a profit in this game i know. i guess thats emotion getting the better of me Wink
I don't bet large amounts and i don't lose large amounts as i'm not that well off but would like to hear how other people deal with the problems that arise when betting and any tips to prevent them happening in the first place.
p.s. if this post is in the wrong thread or there is already a thread on this topic then i'm sorry.

Firstly, only have in your betting account what you are prepared to lose, if you have a good day, withdraw some and continue is what i do

Second, if you like to have a bet on the horses and have identified a few races, back your selections at the same time, then leave the betting and enjoy the racing, this will stop you thinking, oh ive won on this, i'll double on the next, that's the quickest way to losing your money there is

Third, i decide on the stake i am happy betting on a particular selection, or a particular market (horse racing) and i like to stick to it, this stops you spiralling out of control i think

Proved good for me the last few years, and also, one major thing which helps me, is i work for a bookies so i see the amounts people lose and i see the affects of people chasing so that alone is enough to keep me away

All the above is just what i do, and may differ completely from the next person who posts Win

Hello Graybert.

I'm sure there is another thread about this but not sure where. Reckon the mods will move it tho.

Anyway, I dont play poker so cant comment, however I've had my ups and downs with gambling like most on here, you included I guess?

My rules, boring and well known but keep me out of trouble these days:

1 Never bet more than you can afford to lose
2 Never bet after a drink
3 Get as much info as you can on whatever your punt is
4 Never bet for the sake o0f having a bet

5 Most important one...........Remember, there is always tomorrow. I've got myself into a mess and got myself out of it, a few times. I've got myself into a mess and got further into a mess more often tho.
The' lucky last ' can and cant be.
But before going all in on that, remember that tomorrow is a new day, it has races that you have a better overall chance in, not a bumper with unraced 'could be anything' types or a 30 runner apprentice handicap.

Hope some of this helps...
