Did you make a profit before the bad old days before exchanges?
Just wondered, because i go back a while ago before the advent of this and to be honest if it wasnt for the ability of being able to trade and Lay off in running, i personally wouldnt make the small amount of profit that i do.
The greatest profit i show is from trading, and to the stakes that im trading its negligible.
So , and i really like to ask 2 questions, but i'll limit to this Did anyone make a profit before the advent of exchanges?
Any comments would be appreciated. |

What's the difference between "yes but less" and "yes but more after"???
To be honest, I have only been using the exchanges for the last 12 months but in that space of time, yes, I have made more in comparison to before opening an account.
The better prices are obviously something that appeals but the ability to trade, as you mentioned, is an absolute godsend. For example, in a 6f or 7f race just the other day a horse went as low as 1.01 in running when clear with about 1f to go - I didn't have a bet but was watching the market with interest. The horse was eventually colared on the line by a fast finisher but anyone who backed it could have traded out for a very nice profit - as opposed to those who backed it in with a regular bookie who just had to tear up their docket and be frustrated. As a rule, I generally trade out when something hits 1.01 as for the sake of a quid or two I'd prefer to guarantee myself some profit. If the opportunity is there to guarantee yourself a nice profit then take it - the reason most people fail at gambling is greed, whether that's in the shape of not trading out or backing multiples rather than singles.
The biggest advantage to the exchanges in my mind is the ability to Lay. People always say "you'll never see a poor bookie" but these days you can act as both a bookie and a punter - plus you have the advantage of not having to Lay everything like a bookie does. Over the last 6 months the majority of my income has been from laying horses - something I couldn't have done even just a couple of years ago - so in my view, an account with one of the exchanges is a must for anyone who is serious about gambling.

"yes but less" suggests - yes, I made a profit before the exchanges but it was less than I do now
"yes but more after" suggests - yes, I made a profit before the exchanges but I make more now
...it's the same thing, isn't it? _________________ Racing tips in 2007 = +201.04 (LSP)

Yes you are quite right deco. Getting myself confused for a while
lateness of the houre e.t.c.
My questions could have been worded more appropriately.
really interested to see how the older members of O.L.B.G. have faired in terms of success to pre exchange territory.
Hoped it might have stayed on the main thread , that way would have got more of a comprehensive poll. |

the poll question is a bit ambiguous.
are you asking me to answer for "anyone" ie. give my personal verdict on weather anyone at all was making gambling profits prior to exchanges, if so then i'd have to say "yes" as there clearly were people making profits.
myself, no.
I've done better and certainly enjoyed finding stratergy's to try to make money more and better since using exchanges. |
