Ok its been decided that in order to keep daily threads clean of bascially worthless posts and for those good indepth tips to be given pride of place in those daily threads we want to introduce a general chat chat thread, well here it is. This will, we hope further the online football community. A few pointers to note below:

Yes
Any general comments, well done stories, hard luck stores, moans , groans and just general footy chat as you would have over a beer after a match with your mates.

No
Tips, selections, fighting lol

This will be pretty much mod free in term of content but please remember the basic rules.......

Quote:
Rude / Offensive / Flaming to other members (5 points)

Please be courteous and respectful of other forum members and the people you are posting about. If you wouldnt ordinarily say it to someones face then you should not posting it.

Quote:
Bad Taste / Political / Racist / Religious postings (4 points)

No politics or religion please (including jokes) unless just about betting (next president, next pope). Please be wary of anything that may offend, bearing in mind the forum is frequentled by people from all over the world with different beliefs and humour. There is some relaxation of this rule in popular jokes threads like "Cure for Depression" where in the right context these are used in "good faith"

Quote:
Aggressive / Challenging / Not in a co-opertive spirit (3 points)

Please do not be aggressive to others or challenge them - we're all here to help each other so be nice! This includes repeated complaining about the same thing.

Quote:
Bad / Vulgar language (3 points)

Please no swearing or modified swear words designed to bypass our filters

Not sure about the quality of the football, but it was great match! I clicked on to it at 2-2 after I was fed up with the Liverpool game keeping disconnecting....

Ironically, I think it was Pompey a few seasons ago v Fulham on a Monday night that rivalled it for excitement. I was working in the pub that night & looked at the fixture thinking "Oh yea, this'll be a good match... Cheeky " How wrong I was, finished 4-3 or something. Pity there was no-one else in the pub to enjoy it Laughing

If it doesn't make 1st match on MOTD tonight, there's something very wrong with the world...

Id say one of the big 4 will make first match, id say West Ham v Arsenal.
We shall see in 19 mins.
For me a 7-4 scoreline is a bad result for both teams, sure both managers will be fuming at letting in so many goals.

I see your point but as a neutral watching it, it was a good rollercoaster ride of a match.

I appreciate good football as much as everyone, but a match like that is a spectacle to be behold. As I say, not sure about the actually quality as managers would like to see but for neutrals surely a goalfest is preferable to a scrappy nil-nil draw?

Oh, couldn't remember the actual score when clicked it on, just said 2-2 as "cover" Embarassed

I think Leeds Utd were cheated by the referee yesterday, sending off both forwards, is there a conspiracy going on here? remove the danger asap, sure the football league are out to ensure Leeds don't go up especially with the penalty of -15 and also getting the FA on their side to support there punishment. Something amiss here, is this plan B? especially now Leeds have wiped out the -15. The sendings off will be revoked when analyzed for sure, or will they, maybe if Manu or Liverpool, but Leeds, definitely NO! Dennis Wise will be punished too, apparently the Ref swore at him and sent him to the stand, just because Dennis complained about his stupid decisions but obvious intentions of stopping Leeds winning sequence. The season will get more and more interesting from now on and hopefully it will be proved that there is definitely a conspiracy theory here. I believe the some people from the FL are involved and wanting Leeds eventually to be humiliated and thrown out of the league altogether.

Any thoughts on this matter would be much appreciated.

Sorry but that is absolute tosh,
I'm no Gillingham or Leeds fan but they were both red cards.
As to a conspiracy theory well thats rubbish.
Although i would enjoy it if they were chucked out.
Too many league clubs nowadays spend ridiculous money on players/wages but dont have the money and have to go into administration. Eg Leicester. Debts wiped clear. Leeds now have players like Beckford.... explain please.

Personally I can see both sides of the coin of this matter.

Leeds are a victim of their own excess and a victim of their place in English football. Don Revie cultivated a culture at Leeds which saw them become the most hated club of their era. Whilst they were successful on the field they made enemies off it and that has stuck with them all these years. The fans themselves have not helped matters in their actions but I do believe that people go over-the-top in their reactions towards Leeds, such as the 'Although i would enjoy it if they were chucked out' comment above.

If we were to start chucking clubs out of the league that had gone into administration or have debts you wouldn't have a league left. There would be no-one left in the Premiership. I hear no-one saying that Man.Utd should be chucked out because of their well-documented debts. Different club, different attitude towards. I understand when Leeds fans feel they being persecuted because it is like a witch hunt sometimes.

I noticed that feedamusedfish kept his allegiances away from his post. I would be interested to hear who he supports and whether he believes his club is run the appropriate manner.

I'm not sure that being a Tranmere fan qualifies me to speak against clubs going into administration (Tranmere were one of the first clubs to "benefit" from the rules change regarding this in the 1980's). However, it's symptomatic of the society we live in nowadays where it doesn't take much for otherwise solvent businesses to have to enter administration/liquidation proceedings.

Leeds overspent after consecutive qualification for the Champions League but didn't invest wisely enough in players IMO. The main problem with this is not so much the overspend on players but the disparity between Premiership money and Football League money. I severely doubt Leeds expected to be in the position they were in last season when authorising the spend on Champions League "quality" players, and I think that many clubs in their position at the time would have behaved in a similar fashion.

To quote John Gould (ex Swindon manager) :
Quote:
"I'd rather be bottom of the Premiership than top of Division One"

I think a lot of us in Division One at the time couldn't quite believe a manager would say this, but time has bourne this out to be correct. Clever clubs when faced with relegation prepare the club for life in the lower league without wanting to lose players, and having "mercenary" players as part of your squad does not help this task. At the risk of sounding like Trevor Brooking et al, maybe the influx of foreign players does not help to create player loyalty & genuine team solidarity.

It does baffle me however that a club can go into (or dodge) administration but keep players, when other clubs (Tranmere included) have had to let players leave mid contract on a free transfer due to being unable to pay their wages. It doesn't help having contracts where transfer payments are staggered either. There was a point over the last two seasons where Man Utd were still paying Leeds for Rio & eventually saved themselves a couple of million by agreeing a deal where paying a substantial amount of the settlement in one go freed them of obligation with regards to the last couple of installments (in effect cancelling the deal).

If you want to talk about conspiracies, why not talk about the one with regards to coaching qualifications? Why did Pardew & Roeder get forced to take them, but Southgate & Grant are basically being given carte blanche to take as long as they want to complete them?

feedamusedfish, were you there? for a start the referee did over react, Kandol was getting a lot of rough treatment without any support from the ref, you watch games week in week out and players get fouled continously without the officials doing anything, they in fact are frightened of the repercussion's normally from the home team and crowd, Manu this happens at most of their home games. Beckford sending off was a joke, he never touched the other player and there was no malice, Leeds should appeal and have them revoked, but you and I know this will not happen. You must be a Manu or Liverpool fan, more probably a Liverpool fan. Yes I agree administration is a way of getting out of debt, Leeds were put in that position by Ridsdale, you will hopefully agree with that, Bates has done wonders at Leeds, I know many people don't like the guy but he is a business man, and just using the rules to get Leeds back as a viable business. Leeds should not have had the -15 just because of having the necessary CVA which they did have originally, 72% voted for it, only revoked due to Inland Revenue appealing with 5 minutes to go of the 30 day period for appeal, this I believe was not just the Inland Revenue involved in the timing of the appeal , so yes a conspiracy does exist IMO.
Ken Bates and the Club should take it further because if they do not the truth will never come out.

Totally agree with you there. If they are going to implement a rule it should be enforced for all, not just a certain few. But my point is why do they need them? Think of all the great managers from previous era's and none of those had to have qualifications. Ferguson doesn't have these qualifications, neither has Martin O'Neill. Why should they be thrust on others?

I just feel sorry for the Reading boys - scoring 4 goals and losing in top flight football is madness! Up the Pompey though we were playing some really sexy football, and Benjys hat-trick will give him a real confidence boost
