I have noticed over the past couple of months that there has been the overuse of the chat thread, people just writing selections, I am not doubting there selections neither having ago at any one individual, but the section of the site is becoming pretty much like Betfair.
From that we now have posts popping up each day asking a question or two or three that really have no place there, and would be much more apropriate.
I understand OLBG's needs to attract new members and this is what is happening, but wondering if we can come up with a way to combat the issue, as threads are becoming very crowded, and that will lead it to become the same way as Betfair's forum.
Or you could just say HRE shut up, what are you talking about!!!
Kind Regards

I'm an infrequent poster in the daily chat thread, but I do spend a lot of time watching the "chat"
Whilst I agree, HRE, that it is becoming overloaded with some fairly inane comments, I, personally, don't have that much problem with it.
I too would wish for intelligent banter, but that's not what the majority would seem to want. However, I too would hate it to go the way of the Betfair Forums.
I don't think there's a simple answer to this. Over moderation is not the answer in my opinion.
Personally, I would give it time to see how it pans out.
Just ignore it if it gets on your nerves. I do ! |

As a Pro I am embarrassed by the Chat thread at times. How can these people have a value tip in every race?
An irritating downside of OLBG's growth . |

If you over moderate the forum, you will undoubtedly improve the quality of postings (from some peoples perspective), but disuade members from staying with the site, because they will be worried that if they post something it might be jumped on by a mod.
I personally get more irritated by the ever increasing mod messages complaining about the post than i do the posts themselves. |

The thing is it's a chat thread so to heavily police it would be ott. The usual rules of the site (rude/aggressive behaviour, mentioning monetary wins, vulgar language etc.) are still applied in there but the rest, although annoying at times, is just harmless chat. Of course the more professional punters on here will criticise/advise against betting in every race but I'm sure those who are in the chat thread will eventually realise and it should calm itself down in a few weeks.
Look on the bright side though, the Selections Threads have been of superb quality for a solid 2-3 months now. _________________ Racing tips in 2007 = +201.04 (LSP)

lol Deco now where did that post come from ??
While the chat thread is pretty much free for all i do still feel it needs to be moderated for a certain level _________________ Creative web design and brand management service

I must admit that recently, I too have noticed an influx of selections (albeit without explanation) in chat threads. Personally, I am quite comfortable with that since the chat thread is to discuss picks rather than tip them. Obviously its upto individual members to add quality to these discussions, but as the community grows bigger and bigger; its understandable that changes will happen.
What does get on my nerves however is people who put a 'selection' in the chat thread and then come back to say 'get innnnnn ' or 'hope u were on it'. Probably is not my place to say, but the sheer arrogance sometimes really gets on my nerves. Otherwise, I am quite comfortable with the content matter on there (although admittedly standards are dropping). Have to agree with deco as well, the selection thread is filled with quality posts.
Also people (newcomers) need time to adapt and get to par with the level of commitment/quality of posts that more experienced posters have here; but if the mods/site controllers wish to do something about it, they really need to nip it in bud. _________________ Numbers and me, Its a love-hate relationship. Posts like that are probably the most annoying but we do try and get rid as and when we can however 19 pages of chat are sometimes hard to get thru in order to moderate. _________________ Creative web design and brand management service

I understand deano..it is a very tough job to keep 19 pages of chat thread clean (being serious here, not sarcastic, just in case).
I mean to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't expect that thread to be moderated all the time, due to sheer amount of posts in there. My comment was more of a plea (if they ever read it) to curb those boastful statements. _________________ Numbers and me, Its a love-hate relationship. I love them, they hate me! |

We're trying to accomodate everyone.
95% of the forum is heavily moderated with a focus on quality over quantity but then we have a footy and racing chat threads + betting blogs, competetion threads etc that are lower quality from a perpective of helping others but still often a lot of fun for those interested in those sort of things
We still believe in helping beginners to "improve their betting" so we're nto going to ban people for being bad punters although of course we will ban people who are rude etc as Deco said
The site is a long way off being like the Befair forum where theres a thread a minute on every conceivable bizarre topic, lots of personal agendas, bad manners etc |

It has become rather a second tipping thread there, but off the cuff tipping and also, it gets a bit annoying people pat themselves on the back for selections they made 2 minutes before a race goes off or indeed over do their celebrations with 'get in' or 'nice one'. Well done and congratulations, but please not every bloody time you pick a winner! I cannot see what it adds to the thread.
It doesn't help any by going 'I fancy Horse in the next at Racecourse' and then coming if that goes down come back again and again. In recent days, the number of pages has doubled from 10-12 a day to almost hitting 30 and that is mainly due to peoples fancies.
Yes, on occasions I have been guilty myself, but not to a riduculous extent and also, never big myself up when a winner goes in (which, for me, is a huge show of smugness and self importance).
Think there should be a rule to possibly ban people from tipping in any shape or form in the chat thread so that it makes them post in selections with detailed reasons nice and early. Would sure help, but I understand it would be hard to moderate.
Of course, keep the banter going in there, but less of the tipping and 'yesssssssss' please!!! _________________ Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Antony puts it all into perspective with that sentence.
Maybe a little more self moderation is needed on the chat thread, I will do my bit when i can. Something polite like - "Nice tip, but its a little non-OLBG to slap your own back my friend" or "just because bookies price every race doesn't mean to say that sensible OLBG punters need to back in every race". |
