PostPosted: Tue Feb 05, 2008 1:24 am    Post subject: Inside Info Thread

Several people have called for a thread solely for inside info so here it is. This is being run as a trial for the moment. There may be new criteria/rules in the future or the thread may be scrapped completely if it doesn't work but as of now...

FOR POSTERS

If you have received some info about a horse that is not freely available via the internet or newspapers then please post here if you want to share it with other OLBG members.

* If you post on this thread then the results of your tips will be recorded and your stats will be continually updated in this first post for everyone to see. Also, please indicate the price of the horse when you are posting on here.

FOR READERS

Please be careful when reading information on this thread. We cannot guarantee that all information posted here is completely genuine so we advise that you tread carefully when deciding whether to bet on tips given here - especially from 1st time posters.

I agree Deco there are several dangers with this but that doesnt mean there cant be valuable info too.

You have to ask yourself this question
"If I had really great info why would I share it"
The answers are probably one of these

a) To help my friends on the forum
b) To build my reputation on the forum
c) So I can build a quick following and then try to sell the tips*
d) I dont, I want to Lay the horse and am using this to shorten its price

I know weve had people doing c) a fair bit in the past, not sure about d).
Im pretty sure we've probably had some good genuine info too
But which is which?

In some ways evaluating the reliability of the info is harder than picking the winner of the race Laughing

* The way some of these scams work is a bit like the Derren brown show. They dont have genuine info they just pick favourites and hope to run up a streak of wins. If they do get lucky then everyone thinks they have great info and starts throwing money at them.
One way to spot these is that you get short priced tips, huge excuses for losers and then eventually they disappear and come back as a new username to try again

WELL DONE DECO...GREAT TO SEE THIS TRIAL.
I HAVE ONE COMMENT TO MAKE AND THAT IS:- ABUSIVE REMARKS ABOUT TIPSTERS SHOULD BE BANNED. IF A TIP LOSES THEN THAT SHOULD BE THE END OF IT.
I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL TIPSTERS ON HERE WHO HAVE GIVEN GREAT INFO, ONLY TO BE HOUNDED OFF BY IDIOTS WHEN THEY HAVE HAD A BAD RUN.
WE DON'T WANT TO LOSE ANY MORE GOOD PEOPLE.

Try not to use caps plz Smile

"ONLY TO BE HOUNDED OFF BY IDIOTS"
Typically the idiots should be banned very quickly
If they arent then just use the contact form at the bottom of the page and we'll get it sorted

I think if people are going to come forward with what they say is genuine information without making clear what their sources are I think they MUST be prepared to take the rough with the smooth.

I think this thread could be very interesting and is a very good idea because it gives people the option whether they actually want to view this kind of post.

It has to be said however that some of the best tipster's on here are purely readers of form (JC, MOB, Billy121 to name a few) and in my eyes their in-depth write ups and analysis are just as valuable as any so called 'info.' Looking at eddieben's table it seems like there are too many people apparently priveleged to it and I would strongly urge people, especially new members to be selective about which you take seriously.

As I said it would be nice if the people putting forward these kind of tips could enlighten people at least vaguely as to where the information comes from.

Quote:
Sorry Its Late.. Beg steal and Borrow! SKI SUNDAY 2.50 southwell!

That was from yesterday's tips page and has no kind of write up whatsoever but was allowed presumably because the poster is deemed to have access to inside info. However where in the post does it suggest this, and how would a first time user of the site know??

I am not questioning this poster's credibility or access to knowledge but I just feel it is irresponsible and if that is the kind of posting's which we see with regularity on this thread then I would advise people to steer well clear. If people are not prepared to be honest and up front at least vaguely about where their information comes from then it is difficult to trust.

Hopefully now there is a thread dedicated to this there is more of a spotlight on each tip posted so like I said it will be very interesting to see which people from eddieben's table still come forward over the coming months and post on THIS thread.

It is a VERY good idea deco Win and should certainly add some spice to the forum.

Sorry if I have been a bit of a bore Laughing

Its not a thread for me, do you know what I think.....

If you actually have inside info you are governed by strict laws, ie contract law, that you must not release info to others. Now thats not to say that people do or don't but thats to say true inside info is governed and I don't think any shrewdies would post in this thread.

However, work whispers or a mates said this or big bet taken here, seems more feasible, but I would call it work whispers etc rather than inside info.

So on that note, 3.20 no 5.

edit: i better just make it clear in case people cant see my sarcasm, my "tip" is actually my own educated selection!

I do get inside info but I rarely disclose it when doing my write ups. I just say 'expected to go well' or 'well regarded' but don't take that as read every time I say it, it may just come from a stable tour/trainer interview etc. or occasionally it may be from a contact. I don't shout it from the roof tops that I have info on a certain horse.

I am not looking for adulation or support, I do like helping people out with some of the darker areas of racing like juvenile maidens on the flat or bumper races.

Currently we are in the NH season and my only real contact is from the Henderson yard though is now more of a mate than anything but I do not get red hot info, he just gives me a bulletin on how a few horses are going and a few to look out for. You can see all of my bumper horses that Henderson's yard like in my thread on the betting blogs section.

Well done to Deco for setting up the thread. I think it harmless enough as long as people are warned (which Deco has done) that they are resposible for their own judgement whatever people post on here. I agree with Antony's comment also - as I said yesterday; if someone claims 'inside info', then the unwary will tend to attach more importance to the tip than one that has been thought out by a shrewd judge.

What is inside info? If I have a drink in Newmarket and a lad tells me his horse is fit and well and the stable are hopeful of a good run - does that constitute 'inside info'? In my opinion, no. If a lad tells me that a horse has been deliberately stopped in his last few races and now they are going for a touch, then is that inside info? Probably, yes. In that circumstance (theoretical - I am not suggesting that this sort of thing happens legal people) then the sensibility of telling 34 thousand people about it on a website is extremely dubious. In the past, I have paid good money for proper inside info which made me a lot of money. However, the warning was always there to keep my gob shut! I have also paid good money to stable lads who have exhibited an atrocious ability to judge a horse. These lads probaly had dozens of people like me and gave them different views in the knowledge that they would gain favour with some and keep the pocket money coming in.

I think that this thread is useful for one reason only. If Deco is prepared to give his time to logging the results, then no-one should have a problem with what he finds. Anyone complaining that they have proved themselves, or have nothing to prove, then let them stand by their results and be counted. No excuses. After all, is not intrinsic to the purpose of the site? The same criteria applies to the 'judges' and 'form students' so I fail to see why anyone would have an issue with this?

My other concern is that many horses on any one day are the subject of a 'gamble' and it is easy for people to watch a price collapse and then tip it as 'inside info'. I think therefore it is important to log the price in some way that is fair to the poster but also fair on the supposed beneficiary's.

Having had enough debate in recent times about 2 daily threads, which despite my misgivings initially, I think Deco has been proved right and it is working better; we now have 3!

The penultamate paragraph of Billy's post is the one to note. I would prefer it as I am sure a few would on here, if people with 'inside info' posted the evening before the race to dispell the doubters who could accuse of them of this.

As Billy says, what constitutes inside info? I don't get info one one particular horse, I am told what the trainer thinks of a few horses, how a horses last gallop went, how he has worked etc. and that is the reason I shall not be posting anything on this thread. Good work all the same Deco and I will watch with interest. Win

Having read comments from several people over the last day or two I think that this thread will be very interesting. I don't doubt the fact that the people who post "info" on here are actually genuine - I'm sure they are - but as I've always said, if someone has some top quality inside information about a horse then they are going to get the best out of it themselves first and maybe (very big maybe) post on here just before the off to share with 34,000 members but by that stage the value will have disappeared. Personally, I've never backed a horse after reading about "info" on here as I just can't believe the stuff that's posted here is real top quality secret stuff. Cheeky Now, I'm not doubting the fact that it is genuine (I'm sure the majority of people who post it have actually been tipped) but just that I doubt the quality of it and I'd much rather part with my hard earned based on my own form analysis rather than someone's word (which may or may not be genuine) that has eventually made it's way onto a forum of more than 34,000 members.

Then again, maybe I'm just a synical aul fart and the people who post will prove me wrong in the long term with their stats. Maybe people will only post their very best stuff on here and it will prove a big success or maybe some people aren't as good as reputations lead us to believe.

Either way I'd be happy to keep track of the records of people's tips on this thread. It may be difficult to settle on a price for stats but if people post the current price when they tip then we can use the average of that and the sp? - or maybe someone can think of a fairer/better way to do things, please post any suggestions? Wink
