Alfie in all fairness, I have only been keeping records for the past 4 months, and in most of the cases bets are ones I tend to do in running, although I tend to place most of these bets on OLBG, there are other bets on OLBG which I wouldn't place on Betfair, I tend to use OLBG more as a way of trialing new methods and ideas, but use my betting account for the types of bets I feel more confident about. Even just for this month, my ROI on OLBG is over -50% but in reality the figure is positive through in play bets and trading. Value is easier to find in-play rather than pre-match, race, because you get more of an idea of how selections are doing on the day rather than before the event. In fact, in the last week, only 1 selection has been pre-match in reality, and that was on Liverpool to beat Fulham, whereas I made 8 pre-match on OLBG, I would imagine I am not on my own.
I would only say it has helped in keeping me disciplined, which in turn has improved my own betting patterns. I am sure there are many people who bet in different ways and record/don't record their bets, but at the end of it all, it can only be put down to personal preference in all honesty, some people may find it worthwhile and others may find it a waste of time, neither is right or wrong, because as we all know, something that works for one person, doesn't necessarily work for everyone. In fact, once again I revert back to that fantastic post made by you a couple of years ago about improving discipline, it has thoroughly inspired me in many ways to improve my own betting, and I don't think I could thank you enough for probably the best thread I have ever read on this site
This is not me making excuses for a negative profit on OLBG, I just tend to use OLBG as more of a trial account as there's no real risk involved and this site basically automatically tracks progress. Rather than using my own betting account and losing money in the long run _________________ Top Football Tipster June 2006

This is something I've been meaning to do for ages, I keep certain bets logged in a diary, but seeing this thread has got me into action!
I'm drawing up an Excel spreadsheet, with headings Date, Selection, Venue, Race Distance, Race Type, Grade, Going, Age, Weight, Days since last run, Form, OR, Trainer, Jockey, Price, Stake, Bet type, Finishing Position, Distance, Comments.
Am I missing anything or unnecessaarily cluttering it with any info that is a waste of time and space and basically of no use??
Any help/comments/tips appreciated, as I want to get something of use up and running and don't want to have to alter it once I'm using it.
Thanks in advance |

| My advice is to take time setting up your spreadsheet. In my opinion the more information the better, and you will soon find that your betting is disciplined... |

"Do you keep a detailed record of your betting activities?"
No! Why would I want to see all of those losers again?!!
On a serious note, i did for a while in the early days but it scared me too much to see the amounts (even the small ones add up over time) adding up, but I can totally understand the need to do it. I can imagine it also helps to keep a track of not only your spending, but also the nag wagered on and it's finishing position etc... _________________ Nag, nag, nag |

MrLPedigree - you were obviously smarting after your OLBG "Aftertimer of the Year" Award on Saturday as its a little cheeky of you to attack OLBG Royalty for excessive boasting
JC recorded the quoted profits on OLBG over the last 12 months with tips placed at least 5 minutes before the off time. We look forward to you quoting your impressive OLBG Profits someday, should you ever get some |

If your setting up a spreadsheet and use Betfair don't forget to have a total at the top of the "commission" column. Can be quite a shock as the months roll-on |

Cheers for the support Alfie
Can't believe the same guy comes on time after time. No idea what his motive is.
back to spreadsheets - i have a couple of formats to use if people are interested. I always add filters & a summary table to allow me to analyse each area, as well as recording each bet.
Saying that, for the majority I'm sure betting is just a bit of fun & by detailing all the effort would surely dilute the pleasure.
Same goes with all facets of betting. I do straight bets only, but in the past I've won decent amounts on Lucky 15's & for the casual bettor these type of bets are fun because in reality youi know you're probably breaking a few golden rules but its always nice to grab that big win |
