PostPosted: Thu Apr 24, 2008 12:21 pm    Post subject: HORSE RACING - DISCUSSION / DEBATE / FAQ

To help try and tidy up this section of the forum we are introducing an ongoing discussion thread, this can be used for many things some of which are stated below:

*Discuss your fav all time horses and why ?
*Discuss jockeys, who’s the best ? and why ?
*Discuss Trainers different methods and the success they have ?
*Use of the whip, too much ? the punishment to harsh for over use ?
*Ask a question about horse racing or things related to it

We are trying to encourage some really good discussion and debate about issues around the sport.

As ever usual forum rules apply to this thread.

Good idea Deano, but does this replace the Chat Thread? Otherwise I can visualise an on going mix and match...i.e. think I have posted on chat thread, but maybe it should be here Confused

Roger

I can see your confusion but what I think this is for is general stuff, so analysing the David Pipe yard and the form. Rather than actual notes from the days racing.

i.e. Chat Thread - MOB notices a Nick Gifford runner with a good strike rate.

Debate Thread - MartinAllen wants a general opinion of who is the greatest jockey of all time.

Names used for examples only Laughing

Kind Regards
HRE

I have a question, brought on by my brother being stupid and Paying for tips. eg Premium Phone line.
My Question is what do OLBGers think about paying for tips?

Personally i don't see the point. If the tips are as good as the tipster says then why not back it with their own money (take the price), then make it public.
Maybe someone could point out something i haven't thought off.
But when it comes down to it, you are just paying for Whispers. However well informed they are!

If this subject has already been discussed then could someone post a link for me (could find it through the search), thanks.
Win

Tips are free @OLBG Win

If their tips are so good then why do they need the "insurance" of selling them Confused Surely their year on year profits are ample reward Laughing

The fact is that there is a market for selling tips.

the people who pay for tips are people who do not want to put the time and effort it takes to produce reliable and regualr profit making tips. Or they dont have the knowledge or skills to be able to do so. Most of these are MUG punters who even given a regular supply of profitable tips will still betting on every dog race and virtual joke race in the bookies whilst stuffing twentys in the roulette machine therefore losing any profit given to them that they ironically paying for in the first place.

To quote Del Boy, "Supply and demand Rodney, Supply and demand"

there will always be a demand, therefore there has to be a supply, and if you can be entrepreneurial enough to set yourself up as a paid tipster then good luck to you.

The actual premium telephone lines and SMS text services are very cheap to set up, however in recent years, the way they work has changed whereby you have to hit certain numbers of calls before your part of the profit share becomes live and due to you. In years gone by you had a share of the profits no matter how few calls you got. Now you have to spend so much money on marketing your lines to guarantee good traffic with so much competition and "known" tipsters doing the same, that it pretty much takes away what you can make through them. Wink

We do things differently on here to other forums for the very reason that some people dont like all the "noise" on other forums and want lots of quality even if it means less posts.

There are litterally hundreds of other gambling forums where you can ramble on as much as you like but we're not turning this forum into what the rest have become just because a few new members dont understand us

Spot on Ant. This forum is full of high quality info, with great, in depth reasoning. It was getting beyond ridiculous the amount of selections per day on the chat thread, especially on Friday when certain members put up a horse for every race and there were four evening meetings on! Shocked

This isn't high quality, this is off the cuff, non sensical selections people want to make just so they can look good if it wins (which often is a rare occurance). Yes, I occasionaly post a selection in there, but when I do, it is a horse I genuinely fancy and have studyed the form all day and also do try and add a bit of reasoning too.

Enfieldboy, I will say if you don't like go elsewhere because that is exactly what you should do. This has been a forum that has prided itself on good, quality analysis and if you can't/don't want to give that, then perhaps this isn't the place for you.

very much like the idea of a debate thread and a chat thread.

I am not elitist in any way and therefore I like to waffle about nonsensical racing titbits on the chat thread as much as I like to contribute to a proper discussion about important racing issues. Both play an equally important role in bringing likeminded people together.

Chat IS what it is - chat - to talk lightly and informally. It consists of general associated piffle and waffle.

Debate is the discussion and exchange of informed opinions. Therefore, it is helpful to have the two separated here.

so, in response to tomario's question on here:

paying for tipsters is a very naive practice for the most part. I think it does depend on who you call - some well-known tipsters may not have the same strike rate as a professional gambler who bets for a living. But even then, how many professionals offer their services on premium lines??? (That's a genuine question, not a cynical one) I genuinely have no idea. They are aimed at those that have trouble making selections and/or who are looking more seriously at trying to make a quick and easy profit without the hard work. There are many many free tipping services - this being one of them where essayed analysis and quick reasoning (depending on people's available time!) combine to offer a wealth of informed choices. I personally take an interest in others tips, but at the end of the day, I always go with my own selection - win, lose or draw, because for me, my own love affair with the game is about pitting my wits rather than trying to make money.

How about one nice simple rule for everyone, if you don't like what someone says for any reason, then PM a mod and let the mod do the work, then threads will be policed by those that know best. (i have actually no idea who the Mods are on this board is it just Deco ands deano ?) If someone posts something you don't like, ignore it, if it breaks forum rules then highlight to a mod. You see then it's nice clean horseracing based discussions, not ego fights.

As for paid tipsters, not my cup of tea, but as MOB so rightly put it, as with everything in this earth of ours if there is demand there will be supply. So they will always be around and as long as they aren't scamming people good luck to them.

Cheers all
Wish

Think it also depends on your own knowledge and experience, if your a beginner wanting to take it serious maybe it would be worth paying for the odd tip but most of us here are good enough to make our own tips from our own analysis, the only tips id pay for are that with info i have no access too.
