Moan from the Man Utd v Liverpool game today...
I have to say there is no much inconsistency in the refereeing of games these days that matches are being ruined as a result.
How Mascherano can be sent off in the Man Utd v Liverpool game today for dissent when it looks like all he said (twice, if that makes a difference) to the ref was "what's happening?" defies belief.
He hardly had the demeanour of a player that was after causing aggro, in fact he had a nice smile on his face!! Yet in the same week you have the Ashley Cole incident where he scythed down Alan Hutton and got nothing, despite clear and unacceptable dissent in the aftermath.
I have never been a fan of Steve Bennett, he is a poor referee. In my opinion he shouldn’t be allowed to manage Sunday League games... let alone Premiership ones!!
Stuff like this is ruining these games.
(corrected my appalling English - 3/10 - must try harder)

i suspect its prob for more than just saying 'wot is happening'. ref seemed to suddenly 'snap' so he was prob offended by 'footballers language'. footballers are role models for youngsters and it sets a bad example to have all these players haranguing the ref. this sorta aggression spills over into real life and is contributary to the breakdown in this country. youngsters are very influenced by the things they see and hear on tv and read in papers.
the ref has made some other poor decisions in this game and been a bit card happy, but i think obviously he has told the players he will adopt a hardline approach against any bad behaviour/tackles.
wrong use of dissent btw but as u said the game went downhill after! _________________ Positions now available in OLBG Lottery syndicate. 28 lines in each draw dramatically increases chances of a jackpot. Please PM me for info. |

After Masc was booked he argued with the ref at least 3 times after other fouls. Along the lines of "why did you book me and not him?". He had it coming in my view. Top work ref
PS I agree that Cole wasn't reffed to the same standard last week. |

I think it's more the lack of consistency that annoys me (although I still not feel Torres should have been booked and Mascherano subsequently sent off in that phase of play).
The FA need to sit down and give these refs the same message and ensure there is an understanding and consistency that flows in all games. Refs will still make mistakes, but some of this stuff should not be open to human error and individual interpretation.
Wouldn't be surprised to see a sending off in the Chelsea v Arsenal game now |

Bennett is an awful ref in my opinion, I am a Boro fan and when we played Villa two weeks ago he gave them a penalty for 'intentional' handball against Luke Young, the guy wasnt even looking at the ball he tried to block a shot and hit his back, it was a terrible decision.
He is really costing teams at the moment and I have never liked him. |

| Bennett is not one of the best referees. Hes just too persistent which really annoys me. Hes one of those that will cost you big time. |

Refs frequently infuriate & frustrate me, but I must say that it made a pleasant change watching Everton v West Ham yesterday. The longer the game went on, the more impressed with Mark Halseys handling of the game I was.
I believe that any disputed decisions were also proved correct by TV replays. Well done Mr Halsey. |

I agree, the inconsistency of refereeing is ridiculous.
Carragher should've been sent off and United should've had a penalty. This must be at least the 3rd time Carragher has avoided a red card and conceding a penalty, the Everton game springs to mind immediately.
As for Mascherano, it was the right decision! After his yellow, he said "F off" repeatedly to the ref, then he continued on and on 4 or 5 times, and eventually went too far. Nothing wrong with the decision. _________________ Red Bull gives you wings.
Stoke and Hull better stock up on Red Bull then, as its the only way they'll get off the floor next season..... |

| I dont know how anyone can say he didnt deserve to get sent off, time and time again he abused the ref and he just wouldnt leave it, i felt it was the right decision and hope that ref has set the standard to all. The ref need respect like you get in Rugby, when has a ref ever changed his mind because players have run after him shouting ?? |

If Rob Styles had been the referee, would Mascherano have run 30 yards to get involved in the debate?. Let me rephrase that: do you think Mascherano has a sub-70 IQ?
Mascherano ain’t dumb. He ran that far because he thought his team would derive competitive advantage from cowing the ref, and no way would he get a red.
Bennett called his bluff, and went up in my estimation when he did so. It’s just a shame he didn’t walk him on any of the three previous opportunities he had. |

The Torres booking was a joke. He was fouled / kicked 3 times and finally got a free kick when he got away from the 3 united players. It looks as though Torres was asking the ref to have a word with them, maybe give him some protection - if you look at it I don't even think he says anything just jestures "talking" with his hands.
He didn't charge at the ref, swear, raise his hands or anything else agressive. The only reason the ref booked him is because of the grief he had over the A Cole incident when he did nothing as 4th official. He was probably scared that his bosses would have another word with him.
Mascherano was wrong to get involved, especially when he'd already been booked, but again he wasn't agressive or swearing he just asked what was happening. He only lost it after the red card. You can't blame Bennet for sending him off - but had he hadled the Torres incident better, then this wouldn't have happened.
Betking - the abusive language from Mascherano after his first booking was directed at the player he fouled - not the referee. |
