What is it that you're trying to do?
Sounds like a weird question given that you're asking about "movie making software", but if it's to create DVD's that play on your standalone player then I would suggest giving Nero Recode or Nero Vision a try. They come as part of the Nero software & can be accessed through the Nero StartSmart application. _________________ "There's no such thing as a grown-up. We get bigger, we get taller, we get older. I'd still recommend either Nero Recode or Nero Vision.
If YouTube accepts DivX submissions then the DivX convertor - available from the DivX website - will allow you to create one file from many. The convertor is available with a 15 day free trial & it's not that expensive.
Another option open to you could be to transcode & consolidate using the VLC player - this would allow you to stream several files into 1 file of whichever format you need. I have to stress that I've not used this method with too much success but then again I didn't put too much effort in to my attempt & my PC isn't hugely powerful. I believe a little time spent sorting through all the options properly would mean there wouldn't have been the problems I had though. _________________ "There's no such thing as a grown-up. For the DivX player & convertor : www.divx.com
The DivX codec & player are free, the convertor is on a 15 day free trial - I think that's still the case, when I originally downloaded it a couple of years ago you had to pay for the convertor after the 15 days. If it's not the case then even the convertor will be free. It automatically updates to the new versions of the codec. I'd recommend this just for the codec alone to be honest, DivX (or more increasingly XviD) is quickly becoming the format of choice for streaming & downloads. You can buy DVD/Blu-Ray players that are DivX compatible so converting your video files to DivX will allow you to watch your creations on your nice big home telly. When I first downloaded the package, the trial started from the first time I used the convertor & not from time of download.
For the Nero software suite : www.nero.com
Known mainly for their CD/DVD burning software, Nero have been increasingly expanding the capabilities of the their media software. It's now becoming a big rival to Windows own media centre suite - and in my opinion is more powerful & versatile. Not initially intuitive, I would recommend looking at the User Guide & online help - but once you get into actually using the individual pieces of software it opens up & becomes clear why they've set the software up the way they have. Available from the site is a trial version of the software. Nero is my choice of DVD authoring software, but there are other software packages out there & I'm not convinced this is for everyone. Whilst Wondows is getting better at media handling - Vista almost convinced me to stop using Nero - Nero is a great "one-stop-shop" software suite for me.
For the VideoLAN VLC Player : www.videolan.org
French in origin - don't let that put you off - as a student project, VideoLAN started off as an intranet TV player. The upshoot of this is that it's quite good for streaming (and recording) video sources from all over the place. It's grown in capability & is quite happy working with files on an offline PC. Good for "transcoding" (converting AV files between file formats) audio & video files, streaming internet video sources or even just playing a HUGE range of file formats. Very nearly the only media player you'll ever need. Available free. _________________ "There's no such thing as a grown-up. We get bigger, we get taller, we get older. As an interesting sidenote - and hopefully not too much off topic - whilst you need the Xvid codec to play back Xvid format video's on your PC : if you do happen to buy a DivX compatible player - so you can watch your creations on your nice big telly - most of these players will work with Xvid files Or at least by downloading the latest firmware upgrade, can be made to play them. _________________ "There's no such thing as a grown-up. The closest to Windows Movie Maker are definitely the Nero programs I suggested. Once you open the program & get into working with it, it becomes quite user friendly.
VLC is good for transcoding, but you do need to set the options exactly right - not to mention having a decent system & not running anything else while it's doing it's stuff. Although when encoding video files it's a good idea to turn off your screensaver & shutting down as many "background" applications as possible. Video manipulation is notoriously system hungry so freeing up as many resources as you can should help reduce any problems you may encounter.
The main problem I have when transcoding/creating new video is one of "audio slippage" - the action happens onscreen and there's about a second before the sound of that action occurs. I'm pretty sure that's down to my PC set-up though - only running 512Mb RAM isn't helpful Doesn't happen all the time & so it's probably a combination of what I'm manipulating & how I'm manipulating it as well as what else is running on my machine. I normally detest turning off things like IM programs, disconnecting from the internet & disabling my security software so that there's the minimum running. That's down to my niggling internet addiction Can live without anything except my mobile & the internet.... _________________ "There's no such thing as a grown-up. | I use VideoStudio, which is usually bundled free with WinFast TV cards. It is quite good and very easy to use. |
