Longest Time Since Relegation From the Top Flight (In England)
Taking the place of Wimbledon, these clubs have never been relegated from the English Top Flight - Surely it won't last, but it is an interesting trivia point.
1. Wigan Athletic (NEVER)
2. Reading (NEVER)
Teams not Relegated Post War - Only 1!
3. Arsenal (1912/13)
Its been awhile, but with Arsenal way out in front they won't be heading the queue anytime soon!
4. Everton (1950/51)
5. Liverpool (1953/54)
6. Fulham (1967/68)
7. Manchester United (1973/74)
8. Tottenham Hotspurs (1976/77)
Thatcherite Relegatees - But back amongst the Big Time!
9. Aston Villa (1986/87)
10. Portsmouth (1987/88)
11. Chelsea (1987/88)
12. Newcastle United (1988/89)
Premiership Relegatees. Possible Candidates for being referred to as Yo-Yo teams.
13. Sheffield United (1993/94)
14. Middlesbrough (1996/97)
15. Bolton Wanderers (1997/98)
16. Charlton Athletic (1998/99)
17. Blackburn Rovers (1998/99)
18. Watford (1999/2000)
19. Manchester City (2000/01)
20. West Ham United (2002/03)
Few interesting things to note about this list, which is thanks to the stats at football365.com (which seems to be working again).
12 of the current Premiership teams have never been relegated from the Premiership.
though
Only 7 teams have played in the Premiership since its inception. |

|

Longest Time In the English Top Flight
Well, an unsurpassed stint in the Top Flight covering the entire Post War period, not to mention the entire time Between Wars!
1. Arsenal (1919/20)
2 Merseyside Giants have been up for almost the same length of time!
2. Everton (1954/55)
3. Liverpool (1962/63)
Children of the 1970s, Spurs & Devils!
4. Manchester United (1974/75)
5. Tottenham Hotspurs (1978/79)
Children of Thatcher - the fact they came up in consecutive seasons under Thatcher is about all these teams hold in common these days, thanks to Romans millions and millions....
6. Aston Villa (1988/89)
7. Chelsea (1989/90)
Early Premiership Newcomers
8. Newcastle United (1993/94)
9. Middlesbrough (1998/99)
10. Charlton Athletic (2000/01)
11. Fulham (2001/02)
12. Blackburn Rovrs (2001/02)
13. Bolton Wanderers (2001/02)
Recent Premiership Newcomers
14. Manchester City (2002/03)
15. Portsmouth (2003/04)
16. West Ham United (2005/06)
17. Wigan Athletic (2005/06)
18. Reading (2006/07)
19. Sheffield United (2006/07)
20. Watford (2006/07)
Note: Split the Early Premiership Newcomers from the Recent Premiership Newcomers by applying the Millennium Test.
Early Premiership Newcomers have played every single season of the English Premiership beginning in the 3rd Millennium (Assuming the Millennium started in 2001)
whilst
Recent Premiership Newcomers have played at least 1 season that began in the 3rd Millennium in another lower division (Assuming the 3rd Millennium began in 2001 of course!) |

An interesting thing when looking at this type of thing is to look at Italy. The turnover in Italy is amazingly high compared to the Premiership.
In Serie A, there are only 7 teams that have been in Serie A for longer than 6 years.
Juventus
AC Milan
Inter Milan
Lazio
Roma
Parma
Udinese
Hardly a surprise there, only thing that interests me is how long Parma & Udinese can keep their stint up! Both of them did look pretty dodgy this year, have to say. |

Interesting stats jkm
reminds me of a bit of a quiz question - there have been 23 clubs that have won the English top flight - care to name them?
11 clubs have won the Scottish - want to have a go at them?
It's interesting to conjecture, once you've got these 2 lists together whether they will EVER be added to. |

Well, an unsurpassed stint in the Top Flight covering the entire Post War period, not to mention the entire time Between Wars!
1. Arsenal (1919/20) |
1919 - After the First World War, the Football League decided to expand the two divisions from 20 to 22 clubs. Derby County and Preston North End, the top two Second Division clubsin 1914-15, were automatically promoted. Arsenal (who had finished sixth in Division 2 in 1914-15, behind Barnsley, Wolves and Birmingham) were also promoted.
Arsenal owe their place in the First Division to what can only be described as the over-generosity of the Football League.
And they say David Dein has too much influence on the FA Board today?

I do enjoy your musings abt the gooners Kan.. they're always v informative and I'm always thinking how does a spurs fan know so much abt the gooners!
now, if i could find a way to get you onto the board to keep david dein in check.. that'll be great!
to be honest, for a club which spent so many years in the top flight, you have to wonder why they haven't won more 1st div/prem league titles.... hmm.. |

Don't worry there is no secret desire to crossover to the Ribena crew.
I'll leave that to the likes of Osama and Sulzeer Jeriamiah!!! _________________ "Statistics are like mini-skirts .. they give you good ideas but hide the most important parts." > One-A-Day Football Challenge for January now open. |

I'll have a stab at it, and I have looked back through the lists of champions before (though not for a couple of years)
Going Backwards....
1. Chelsea
2. Manchester United
3. Arsenal
4. Blackburn Rovers
5. Leeds United
6. Liverpool
7. Everton
8. Aston Villa
9. Nottingham Forest
10. Tottenham Hotspur
11. Derby County
12. Manchester City
13. Portsmouth
14. Huddersfield Town (Won 3 in a Row! 1926-28 if memory serves)
15. Sheffield United
16. Preston North End
17. Newcastle United
18. Sheffield Wednesday
19. Sunderland
20. Wolverhampton Wanderers
21. Burnley
22. West Bromwich Albion
23. Bolton Wanderers (Won the FA Cup, not sure of the league)
At a guess, those would be the 23 clubs for me. As to whether another team could ever win it - that is a good question swift!. Another team from England is IMO unlikely - but if a team like Cardiff City could ever get a new stadium, get some money and get the whole of Wales behind it - it might be possible - but that ain't gonna happen anytime in the next 30 years - so not anytime soon.
As for Arsenal KanK, yep! they were indeed very fortunate to get promoted from 6th position - how much money do you think actually changed hands to make that possible?
I think I read somewhere that part of the reason they got that promotion was that the `powers-that-be' wanted a team somewhere in Inner North London or something. Whatever happened, I don't think you'd find anything like that happening today - unless you're talking about Italian football! |

Doh!
http://rsssf.com/tablese/engchamp.html
Just checked out the list - and of course Bolton has never won the league, it was Ipswich Town that I stuffed up on! Back in the 1960s of course, have seen that before! Oh well.
Have a go at Scotland now and that is something I've really looked at perhaps once or twice.
1. Celtic
2. Rangers
3. Aberdeen
4. Hearts
5. Hibernian
6. Dundee United
7. Dundee
8. Kilmarnock
9. Falkirk
10. One club that went broke 80+ years ago
11. Another club that went broke 80+ years ago
That's my feeble effort for Scotland, but I have a feeling a couple of early victors are no longer with us..... |

Good effort jmk
You're right one of the scottish clubs, Third Lanark, is no longer in the league although I wouldnt be surprised if theyre still playing in some minor league somewhere. The other one, Dumbarton who won the first two in the 1890s, still is of course but has never been able to regain those glory days. By the way, Falkirk haven't won it but Motherwell have.
You're spot on with the English (once you'd rectified your Bolton slip) and I can't see the list ever been added to. Don't you think it was a bit unimaginative of Abramovic to have picked Chelsea for his billions - in his position I'm sure I would've been tempted to bring the likes of Carlisle or Scunthorpe to the top of the Prem! |

9/11 - not too bad.....
http://rsssf.com/tabless/scotchamp.html
9/11 if you give me Third Lanark, champions of 1904! (Who?) As one of the clubs that went bust.
Apologies to Motherwell, should have remembered you're a more storied club than Falkirk.
And as for Dumbarton! Oh yeah! But don't think they'll be adding to their 1892 title anytime soon.
As a point of interest, that enduring 114 year drought since Dumbarton's last crown must be one of the longest droughts of any professional sporting club in the world! (For a club that is still around! - probably bested only by Preston NE now that I think of it.)
And looking at the Scottish Tables, Dumbarton have just been relegated to the basement division in Scotland! As that the lowest ebb ever for any former Scottish Champion?
Longest in America is the Chicago Cubs @ 98 years |
