Longest Time Since Relegation From the Top Flight (In England)

Taking the place of Wimbledon, these clubs have never been relegated from the English Top Flight - Surely it won't last, but it is an interesting trivia point.

1. Wigan Athletic (NEVER)
2. Reading (NEVER)

Teams not Relegated Post War - Only 1!
3. Arsenal (1912/13)

Its been awhile, but with Arsenal way out in front they won't be heading the queue anytime soon!

Longest Time In the English Top Flight

Well, an unsurpassed stint in the Top Flight covering the entire Post War period, not to mention the entire time Between Wars!
1. Arsenal (1919/20)

2 Merseyside Giants have been up for almost the same length of time!
2. Everton (1954/55)
3. Liverpool (1962/63)

Children of the 1970s, Spurs & Devils!

Children of Thatcher - the fact they came up in consecutive seasons under Thatcher is about all these teams hold in common these days, thanks to Romans millions and millions....

An interesting thing when looking at this type of thing is to look at Italy. The turnover in Italy is amazingly high compared to the Premiership.

In Serie A, there are only 7 teams that have been in Serie A for longer than 6 years.

Juventus
AC Milan
Inter Milan
Lazio
Roma
Parma
Udinese

Hardly a surprise there, only thing that interests me is how long Parma & Udinese can keep their stint up! Both of them did look pretty dodgy this year, have to say.

reminds me of a bit of a quiz question - there have been 23 clubs that have won the English top flight - care to name them?

11 clubs have won the Scottish - want to have a go at them?

It's interesting to conjecture, once you've got these 2 lists together whether they will EVER be added to.

to be honest, for a club which spent so many years in the top flight, you have to wonder why they haven't won more 1st div/prem league titles.... hmm..

I'll have a stab at it, and I have looked back through the lists of champions before (though not for a couple of years)

Going Backwards....

1. Chelsea
2. Manchester United
3. Arsenal
4. Blackburn Rovers

9. Nottingham Forest
10. Tottenham Hotspur
11. Derby County
12. Manchester City
13. Portsmouth
14. Huddersfield Town (Won 3 in a Row! 1926-28 if memory serves)
15. Sheffield United
16. Preston North End
17. Newcastle United
18. Sheffield Wednesday
19. Sunderland
20. Wolverhampton Wanderers
21. Burnley
22. West Bromwich Albion
23. Bolton Wanderers (Won the FA Cup, not sure of the league)

At a guess, those would be the 23 clubs for me. As to whether another team could ever win it - that is a good question swift!. Another team from England is IMO unlikely - but if a team like Cardiff City could ever get a new stadium, get some money and get the whole of Wales behind it - it might be possible - but that ain't gonna happen anytime in the next 30 years - so not anytime soon.

As for Arsenal KanK, yep! they were indeed very fortunate to get promoted from 6th position - how much money do you think actually changed hands to make that possible?

I think I read somewhere that part of the reason they got that promotion was that the `powers-that-be' wanted a team somewhere in Inner North London or something. Whatever happened, I don't think you'd find anything like that happening today - unless you're talking about Italian football!

Just checked out the list - and of course Bolton has never won the league, it was Ipswich Town that I stuffed up on! Back in the 1960s of course, have seen that before! Oh well.

Have a go at Scotland now and that is something I've really looked at perhaps once or twice.

You're right one of the scottish clubs, Third Lanark, is no longer in the league although I wouldnt be surprised if theyre still playing in some minor league somewhere. The other one, Dumbarton who won the first two in the 1890s, still is of course but has never been able to regain those glory days. By the way, Falkirk haven't won it but Motherwell have.

You're spot on with the English (once you'd rectified your Bolton slip) and I can't see the list ever been added to. Don't you think it was a bit unimaginative of Abramovic to have picked Chelsea for his billions - in his position I'm sure I would've been tempted to bring the likes of Carlisle or Scunthorpe to the top of the Prem!

Apologies to Motherwell, should have remembered you're a more storied club than Falkirk.

And as for Dumbarton! Oh yeah! But don't think they'll be adding to their 1892 title anytime soon.

As a point of interest, that enduring 114 year drought since Dumbarton's last crown must be one of the longest droughts of any professional sporting club in the world! (For a club that is still around! - probably bested only by Preston NE now that I think of it.)

And looking at the Scottish Tables, Dumbarton have just been relegated to the basement division in Scotland! As that the lowest ebb ever for any former Scottish Champion?

Longest in America is the Chicago Cubs @ 98 years
