We have to go back to 1998 and Cape Cross to find the last winner of the Lockinge that returned an SP in double figures so it would appear that shocks are few and far between in this Group One race.
At this stage of proceedings the betting for the race has five horses at under 10/1 and the most interesting of these is the Godolphin owned Chreachadoir .
The formerly Jim Bolger trained colt was bought by Godolphin on the back of some good performances in 2007, most notably when finishing runner-up to Cockney Rebel in the Irish 2000 Guineas. Four races have ensued since the purchase and Chreachadoir has put up two cracking performances for Saeed Bin Suroor, on both occasions when asked to perform over the Lockinge trip of one mile. Stamina is in doubt at distances over a mile so the Lockinge would seem ideal, especially given that Bin Suroor has already won this race three times in the last decade.
Godolphin’s early season form is a concern but they have had a winner at York this week and this horse has won first time out before. His performance in the Hong Kong Mile in December was top class and at odds around 6/1 he looks the clear value call in the race.
