Grand National 2010 Entries Include Mon Mome And Comply Or Die
Friday 05 February 2010 at 12:14
The entries for the 2010 Grand National were released earlier this week and a total of 112 horses were entered at the initial stage including the last three winners of the great race: Mon Mome, Comply Or Die and Silver Birch.
Mon Mome In Good Shape For Title Defence
The Venetia Williams trained Mon Mome will try to achieve what the past thirty-three winners have been unable to in attempting to win back to back Grand Nationals but the magnitude of his task is underlined by the fact that only two horses have achieved this feat since 1900 – Reynoldstown in 1935/36 and the great Red Rum in 1973/74.
The Williams trained gelding showed he was in decent form when finishing fourth in the recent Peter Marsh chase at Haydock and connections must be very hopeful of another good run at Aintree.
Comply Becoming National Treasure
David Johnson’s Comply Or Die is being aimed at his third Grand National after winning the race in 2008 and finishing second in 2009 – a record as impressive as any horse in recent years.
At eleven-years-old he is still more than capable of winning back his crown and if the handicapper were to give him slightly less weight in 2010 than last year he could prove a very dangerous opponent.
Silver Birch Could Surprise
Gordon Elliott’s Silver Birch is not getting any younger at thirteen years of age but after some problems with injury and some experimentation with Cross Country races, the former Grand National winner’s handicap mark has gradually returned to the same sort of range as to when he won in 2007.
Experience at Aintree has proved very useful in recent years and he could prove to be a popular outsider.
A Quality Field Looks Assured
There weren’t many surprises in the field of entries but a couple of the names that hadn’t previously appeared on the bookies ante-post lists were the likes of recent Cheltenham winner Taranis, multiple Grade One and Two winner Our Vic, Cheltenham stalwart Joe Lively and former RSA Chase winner Albertas Run.
This gives the list of runners a very classy look and, as usual, a great race seems a certainty.
