Ryder Cup Tips: Top GB And Ireland And Top Debutant
Tuesday 16 September 2008 at 16:32
Paul Casey has only lost once in his two appearances in Ryder Cups and that was in a singles match against Tiger Woods.
Nick Faldo is known to be a big fan of the young man from Cheltenham and he is expected to play a leading part in Faldo’s plans so this should give Casey a great chance of finishing top points scorer amongst the GB and Ireland players.
Top GB and Ireland: Casey Looks The Best Bet
11/2 with Stan James looks a very generous price about Casey considering that Lee Westwood (11/4 Bet365) has been on the easy list with tonsillitis for a couple of weeks, Justin Rose (6/1 ToteSport), Graeme McDowell (11/1 Stan James) and Oliver Wilson (22/1 Bet365) are all making their debuts and it would be hard to see them scoring heavily on their first appearances.
Ian Poulter (13/2 William Hill) who may be too much under the spotlight due to keeping other players out of the team.
This just leaves Padraig Harrington who is the favourite to be the leading player from the home countries at 11/4 with Totesport. However, as outlined yesterday, his record in this event is patchy and the fact that he has found it hard to get motivated it previous Ryder Cups does not inspire much confidence.
All in all this adds up to Casey being a five star bet.
Top Debutant: Stricker Can Use Valuable Experience
Ten players are making their debuts in the 2008 Ryder Cup and the most surprising name on the list is probably four time winner on the PGA Tour, 41 year old Steve Stricker.
The man from Wisconsin seems to have been playing great golf for years so it is surprising he hasn’t made the team before and his experience should give him the edge over the other “rookies”.
Stricker is a best placed 13/2 with Boylesports and looks just the sort of player US Captain Azinger will call on regularly.
Rising star Anthony Kim is the favourite in this market at 4/1 with Paddy Power.
