Chelsea Woes Deepen As Alex Bunks Off Back To Brazil
Wednesday 01 August 2007 at 15:25 Jose Mourinho's plans of starting the season on a high by beating arch rivals Manchester United in the Community Shield at the weekend have taken a blow after it emerged his new signing Alex has gone straight back home without leaving the airport.
The mid fielder returned to his native Brazil without leaving the airport after immigration officials at Heathrow said it was unlikely he would be granted a work permit.
The news will be welcomed by United's own Alex (Ferguson), whose Red Devils are now favourites to raise the Community Shield with odds of 44/27 with Bet365 to win against Chelsea, who stand at 7/4 with the same bookies to lift the trophy.
The 25-year-old Brazilian was told by officials that he was unlikely to qualify for a permit because he had failed to play the required minimum number of international games since 2005.
There are some enticing odds on offer for the match. Blue Square have Didier Drogba at 7/1 to score first in the pre-season game but interestingly he is joint favourite to pull-off the feat with Manchester United's first Chinese signing Fangzhuo Dong (7/1 with Bet 365).
A specials bet on Manchester United's new Portuguese signing Nani scoring a hat trick with odds of 200/1 with Blue Square is tempting, but the attractiveness of those odds could be tempered by the news that he's carrying an ankle injury sustained in the European U21 Championships and is unlikely to line up for tonight's match with Inter Milan.
