Wariner Looks Strong For Japan
Wednesday 08 August 2007 at 10:48 American sprinter Jeremy Wariner is looking like a good prospect for this month's world championships in Japan after getting the third quickest 400 metre time on record yesterday.
The defending Olympic and world champion was competing at the Stockholm Super Grand Prix where he came in at 43.50 seconds.
Wariner has said he aims to better Michael Johnson's world record of 43.18 seconds and is on form to do it after looking comfortable throughout the race, and coming in with a trademark strong finish to smoke his rivals.
The win was significant - fellow American Kerron Clement took 44.48 seconds for second place - and will no doubt shorten odds on Wariner doing the same in Japan.
He said: "My race was pretty much perfect. My third 100 metres was a little slow, but I made up for it during my home stretch."
About pushing for a new world record in Japan he added; "There's a chance, the track is real fast. I am not going to force it, I'll just go out there and run my race."
That attitude has done the athlete well in the past, so with the extra confidence from yesterday's win everything is in place for a great performance in Japan.
