Players Desert England In Droves
Tuesday 21 August 2007 at 15:21 England's friendly against Germany may have sold out Wembley, but the squad will be a shadow of its former self with a raft of injured players kept away by worried Premiership managers.
Yesterday saw four more withdrawals from a squad that had already been looking anaemic.
Tottenham held back Darren Brent for an unspecified thigh problem and Steven Gerrard missed training after a scan on the hairline fracture to his left foot.
Meanwhile Sol Campbell and Owen Hargreaves turned up for training but will play no part tomorrow.
Other injured absentees include Wayne Rooney, Ledley King, Aaron Lennon, Gary Neville, Wayne Bridge and Michael Dawson.
Adding to this, Peter Crouch is suspended for the match against Israel on September 8th and McClaren will need to prepare for his absence, so he will be left out.
As the natural partner for Michael Owen up front, Crouch's absence will make for an uncertain attack.
It seems McClaren is keen to stay on the right side of managers, with his job on the line in the Euro 2008 qualifiers over the coming months.
He hopes to get all his stars back off them by the time England plays Euro 2008 home games against Israel and Russia, matches his side must win to stay in contention for the two qualification spots from each group.
So, having named an initial squad of 28 on Friday, just 13 outfield players and three keepers remain for tomorrow.
