Boro Left Bare Up Front
Thursday 23 August 2007 at 10:44 Middlesbrough will face Newcastle with a weakened attack on Sunday after agreeing to flog striker Yakubu Ayegbeni to Everton.
Neither club has announced the fee, but British papers claim it will be £11 million.
That is £3.5 million more than Boro bought him for two years ago, so the club has made a shrewd investment, although his sudden absence will leave the team on the back foot.
The 24-year-old Nigerian international scored 35 goals in 103 matches after joining the club from Portsmouth.
His place will be filled by a new front line made up by Tuncay Sanli, Jeremie Aliadiere and Ahmed Mido, who has already impressed.
Mido recently galvanised Boro to their second victory at Fulham in 22 years.
Meanwhile, Boro are waiting to seal a deal with Heerenveen for striker Afonso Alves, who was the top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie last season.
If the deal doesn't go through the squad will be left somewhat threadbare up front, leaving Boro's immediate success in doubt, as well as bringing odds on a relegation in.
