Ramos Embarrasses Spurs
Thursday 23 August 2007 at 12:49 Tottenham have been deeply embarrassed after the Sevilla coach, Juande Ramos, said yesterday that he had received a "dizzying" offer from the club only an hour-and-a-half after the Spurs website claimed White Hart Lane had not offered the job to anyone.
The debacle throws doubt on the future of the club and signals a lack of organisation that will damage the confidence of fans and punters.
Spurs had presented their coach Martin Jol with an ultimatum on Tuesday, but the following day issued the sombre statement: "To further clarify the situation - the club wished to make it clear and unequivocal that no individual was or has been offered the position of manager-coach at this club while that position has been held by Martin Jol. It is wholly inaccurate and inappropriate to suggest otherwise."
But a short while later Ramos turned up at Sevilla's training ground to say he was staying put despite an offer from Spurs.
He then appeared to backtrack, saying he could not understand what all the "fuss" was about, and denied meeting with Spurs secretary John Alexander and vice-chairman Paul Kemsley on Friday despite being photographed doing so.
When cornered, Ramos claimed an offer had indeed been tabled, but through an intermediary, and admitted: "They made an excellent, dizzying offer to me."
Shortly afterwards Spurs were involved in similarly doomed smokescreen efforts, telling journalists that Ramos might have been misreported or mistranslated, and even that he had not in fact mentioned Spurs at all.
