United Hit By Solskjaer Loss
Tuesday 28 August 2007 at 16:47 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's announced retirement today draws a close over a graceful and loyal career in the service of Manchester United, but many will overlook the dangerous vacuum he leaves up front.
Despite persistent injury, Solskjaer scored 128 goals in 11 seasons - often to win matches - which is a function that desperately needs to be filled, especially now that United are plagued by other injury problems up front.
Louis Saha's persistent niggles and Wayne Rooney's fractured foot now leave recent signing Carlos Tevez on his own as a first team striker, which will scare punters off for the time being.
Unless Cristiano Ronaldo is switched to the centre, or Dong Fangzhuo or Fraizer Campbell are promoted into the first team, no-one else is around to bolster the attack.
Saha is expected to reappear soon, but his habit of late returns and short-lived fitness makes a full blooded United front line a pipe dream.
If Sir Alex Ferguson can't find the cash to bring in another reliable goal-scorer his squad will struggle this season, so expect odds on Premiership domination to go out.
