New Beckham Injury Threatens Euro 08 Hopes
Thursday 30 August 2007 at 11:22 David Beckham has caused panic ahead of two Euro 2008 qualifiers after he strained knee ligaments while playing for LA Galaxy yesterday.
The disaster, which comes on the back of niggling ankle problems that had already worried England fans, will mean the free kick goal machine could be left out of the squad for the games against Israel on September 8th and Russia on the 12th, damaging confidence and scaring off punters.
England odds will go out as a result, offering a tempting chance to make more from wins.
Beckham said: "At this stage, it's hard to tell, but it doesn't feel good. With a ligament strain, it's four-to-six weeks. We'll have to wait and see."
There is little margin for error in qualification for England. The two top teams from group E will progress, but England are currently ranked fourth with 14 points, with Croatia and Israel (who have played an extra game) on 17 and Russia on 15.
However, Michael Owen seems to have broken his oppressive goal drought by scoring for Newcastle last night, so don't desert England just yet.
