Ferguson Afraid Ronaldo Will Be Targeted By Ref
Wednesday 19 September 2007 at 11:34 Ahead of Manchester United's Champion League match tonight against Sporting Lisbon manager Alex Ferguson is asking for the referee to give Cristiano Ronaldo a break and not penalise his talent.
Ferguson believes that Ronaldo has been unfairly targeted, citing incidents in matches against Portsmouth and Everton.
"I certainly think on the two occasions we are talking about this season there is without question in my mind an unfairness about it," Ferguson said.
On Ronaldo's sending off for fouling Portsmouth's Richard Hughes, he said: "When we see it from our angle - the pictures we have seen - it's quite ridiculous."
SkyBet are offering odds of 8/1 that Ronaldo is booked for diving tonight and 12/1 that he's sent off.
German referee Herbert Fandel has history with United and sent off Roy Keane in United's 2-1 defeat by Porto in 2004, as well as Paul Scholes when the Red Devils lost to Roma last season.
The good news fro United is that Wayne Rooney looks fit to return and is currently priced at 15/8 to score.
SkyBet are also offering odds on what happens first: Rooney carded at 9/2; Rooney scores at 5/2; he's subbed at 3/1; he hits the woodwork at 14/1; and the chances of him winning a penalty priced at 20/1.
