Faldo Prepares For First Captaincy Role In Seve Trophy
Tuesday 25 September 2007 at 14:15 Nick Faldo is getting ready for his first role as captian when he leads the Great Britain and Ireland team against Seve Ballesteros' Continental Europe in the Seve Trophy.
Despite taking the name of the Spanish five times major winner Seve Ballesteros, it is GB and Ireland that have won three of the four previous tournaments and who are favourites to take the title this year with odds of 4/9 with Paddy Power.
In the GB and Ireland team the experience comes from Englishmen Paul Casey, Justin Rose and Nick Dougherty, Welshman Bradley Dredge and former captain Colin Montgomerie of Scotland, with Rose favourite to take the most points on 7/1 and Casey second at 15/2.
This is supplemented by tournament five debutants in the form of wildcards Simon Dyson and Marc Warren of Scotland as well as Englishmen Phillip Archer, Graeme Storm and Oliver Wilson. Archer and Dyson are both priced at 20/1 to be top tournament scorer, while Storm, Warren and Wilson are priced at 25/1.
In the continental team, Dane Thomas Bjorn and Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano are Balesteros' wild card picks.
Qualifiers come in the form of Markus Brier of Austria, Dane Soren Hansen, Gregory Havret of France, Finland's Mikko Ilonen, Robert Karlsson of Sweden, Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, Peter Hanson of Sweden and Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin.
On the continental team Jimenez is priced at 10/1 to be top tournament scorer, while Hansen and Karlsson are at 12/1, Bjorn 14/1 and Hanson 16/1.
The tournament takes place at the Heritage Golf and Country Club at Killenard, County Laois, Ireland on Thursday.
