Who Next To Go The Way Of Jose?
Wednesday 26 September 2007 at 15:28 The Barclays Premiership is now in full swing and early season jitters are no excuse for under performing managers, so the question is who will be the next manager to get the axe?
Mourinho was the first (though apparently by "mutual agreement") but he certainly won't be the last and the pressure seems to be showing on the faces of a few.
Martin Jol in particular could be clearing his desk soon if rumours are to be believed. He's priced at 1/2 to be the next manager to go with SkyBet and with his team sitting in 18th in the table he's on thin ice.
Yesterday, it was reported that Jol had accepted a £4 million compensation package to leave Spurs but was only staying until they secured a replacement. The reports were denied by the Tottenham board.
If he is next to go at least Jol had three years in the job - Avram Grant may be out of Chelsea before he even gets his feet under the table.
The director of football at the club, who is priced 5/1 to be the next to go, has not signed a new contract and there are rumours that Chelsea have made moves for Holland coach Marco Van Basten, though again denied by the club.
Second favourite on 7/1 is Derby manager Billy Davies. It's not surprising as things couldn't get much worse for the Rams with only one win this season. Despite the fact Davies saw them promoted, embarrassing drubbings by Liverpool and Arsenal - 6-0 and 5-0 respectively - may be too much for the board and fans to bear.
Priced at 3/1, another likely candidate could be Bolton's Sammy Lee. The Trotters are only shielded from the bottom of the table by the hapless Rams and are used to better results under Sam Allardyce. However, performances have improved of late and there are few signs that the Bolton board want a change.
