Scotland Odds Slide After Georgia Defeat
Thursday 18 October 2007 at 10:03 Tartan dreams of emulating Greece and lifting the European Championship trophy were shattered after they slumped to defeat against Georgia.
With the Scots still the masters of their own destiny, a win at Hampden against World Champions Italy will see them through to the finals.
However, taking something from the encounter in Tblisi would have avoided a winner takes all nerve jangler with the Azzuri.
The defeat to the already eliminated Eastern European outfit saw Scotland's championship odds slide to 150/1 with Blue Square and Totesport.
And clearly disappointed, Scotland manager Alex McLeish told BBC Sport: "I don't think anybody gave us a prayer of being in this position.
"To be going into the game against the Italians needing to win is phenomenal.
"Maybe our momentum was disrupted by missing players and we were short of the quality we had in other games."
He added: "Nobody gets an easy game in Georgia and they have made it difficult for a lot of teams considered better quality than us."
Georgia manager Klaus Topmoller made several changes to his side handing a debut to 17-year-old goalkeeper Giorgi Makaridze and Levan Kenia a 16-year-old midfielder from Schalke.
