McClaren For The Chop Following Russia Loss?
Thursday 18 October 2007 at 16:59 Speculation is rife that Steve McClaren could be sacked as England manger following the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Russia, despite being assured that his job is safe.
Wayne Rooney opened the scoring for England in the first half for the visitors but two second half strikes, including a contentious penalty, by Roman Pavluchenko rescued the game for the Russians.
But McClaren, despite Coral offering 8/11 for the former Middlesbrough man to not be in his job at the end of the year, has been backed by FA Chief Executive Brian Barwick.
Barwick said: "Steve has our support but our job is to focus on Croatia.
"It is a very big day when Russia play Israel on 17 November, we need Israel to stop them winning and help us."
He added: "Steve has a job to do and he must now get the players ready for the Croatia game.
However the news will come as scant consolation for McClaren with bets already being placed on who will become his successor.
Ladbrokes have made Phil Scolari the 5/2 favourite with Russia Guus Hiddink close behind at 3/1.
