Staunton Leaves Republic Post
Wednesday 24 October 2007 at 14:16 Steve Staunton has left has job as manager of the Republic of Ireland by mutual consent after an emergency meeting with the FAI.
The former Liverpool defender was the shock replacement for Brian Kerr back in January 2006 and was accompanied by Sir Bobby Robson in a consultancy role.
But following the unsuccessful Euro 2008 qualifying campaign the Republic's shock defeat to Cyprus, Staunton's tenure has come to an end.
And with Staunton looking now looking for alternative employment, David O'Leary is the favourite to land the role with Paddy Power offering 5/4 on the former Aston Villa manager taking the reins.
Thanking Staunton and his team for their contribution to the national team, FAI president David Blood said: "They have brought through many young players and leave behind a squad with strong development potential."
But unhappy with results, he added: "As a member of the three-man committee that made the recommendation to appoint Stephen and his team, I am disappointed that things have not worked out the way I, Stephen or my colleagues on the board expected."
Former Blackburn boss Graeme Souness can be backed at 9/2 and Liam Brady at 10/1, with Paddy Power, to revive the luck of the Irish.
