Scorpion Misses Melbourne Cup
Wednesday 31 October 2007 at 10:58 Aidan O'Brien charge Scorpion will miss Tuesday's (November 6th) Melbourne Cup - boosting the odds of Mahler, Zipping and Efficient.
The horse, son of Montjeu, has been retired to stud after ligament damage to one of his hind legs ruled him out of the Australian encounter.
And the injury has shortened the odds of many of Scorpion's challengers for the crown, with stablemate Mahler's odds cut to 8/1 with Ladbrokes, Zipping's odds reduced to 9/1 with Stan James and Efficient's chances slashed to 13/1 with Bet Chronicle.
It's the second blow in quick succession for the stable, after George Washington suffered a a fatal injury during the Breeders' Cup.
A disappointed O'Brien said: "I would imagine he would probably be retired now because the plan was if everything was well after the Melbourne Cup, we were going to keep him in training next year.
"But when he has an injury like that and he's a very important horse - you couldn't take a chance with him."
Meanwhile, Master O'Reilly remains the favourite to scoop the Melbourne Cup and is a 4/1 bet with Blue Square.
