Italians Pledge To Ignore Turmoil To Beat Scots
Wednesday 14 November 2007 at 11:10 Italy's footballers will not be distracted by tragic events back home as they head into their vital Euro 2008 qualifier against Scotland, claims Giancarlo Abete, the country's football chief.
The Italians face Scotland at Hampden Park this Saturday (November 17th) with the Scots knowing they must beat the World Champions to ensure progress to the finals of the competition in Austria and Switzerland next year.
Their preparations have been overshadowed by the death of a Lazio fan last weekend, but Abete believes the Italians, who are 11/10 favourites with Bet Fred to win the match, will have the nation's support.
"This is an important week for Italian football. But the national team has the support of the nation," he told the BBC.
"Saturday's encounter is a difficult game but the team is preparing well," he added.
Scotland require a win to guarantee their passage to the Euro 2008 finals and the best price available for a Scottish victory is 11/4 with Blue Square, while the draw that would keep their hopes alive is 9/4 with Bet Fred.
