Pienaar To Miss Chelsea Carling Cup Clash
Monday 07 January 2008 at 12:38 Everton's South African midfielder Steven Pienaar is set to miss Tuesday's (January 8th) Carling Cup match with Chelsea.
The midfielder has joined his country's African Cup of Nations squad after the a request to delay his departure for the tournament was refused by the South African Football Association (SAFA).
And with the 25-year-old unavailable for selection, Chelsea remain Bet365's 4/6 favourites for the clash, with Everton 4/1 outsiders with CanBet.
Moiro Sanyane, the director of communications for SAFA, revealed that the decision had to be made to prevent all of the nation's players reporting late.
He said: "Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira wanted to help out domestic clubs but realised that if he allowed Pienaar to stay he would have to let the other players attend late as well.
"I'm sure Pienaar will be disappointed that he is missing out on this game, but the consolation is that he will have the opportunity to play against the greatest players in Africa," he added.
Meanwhile, Everton are the Carling Cup underdogs after being priced at 4/1 with Ladbrokes to win the trophy.
