OLeary Rejects Chance To Become Next Ireland Manager
Friday 18 January 2008 at 14:49 David O'Leary has declined an interview to become the next manager of the Republic of Ireland.
The former Aston Villa manager's decision has left Gerard Houllier as the favourite, rated at 4/6 on with Ladbrokes.
On deciding not to formally apply for the position, O'Leary revealed that he would prefer another chance to manage at club level.
He said: "After much soul-searching and thought I've declined the offer from the Football Association of Ireland to be interviewed for the vacant post of international team manager. It's a great honour and I'm very flattered to be considered.
O'Leary added: "However, at this point in my career I wish to return to full-time club management and therefore reluctantly have decided against the opportunity to manage my country at this point."
Meanwhile. Liam Brady is the most likely Irishman to take charge of the national side, priced at 8/1 with Paddy Power.
