Jankovic Defeats Williams To Boost Australian Open Odds
Tuesday 22 January 2008 at 09:07 Serbia's Jelena Jankovic beat defending champion Serena Williams in straight sets to gain a place in the semi-final of the Australian Open.
Jankovic, the third seed, brushed her opponent aside 6-3, 6-4 and is now 13/2 to win the tournament with Totesport.
The match, which had been tipped to be a classic encounter, was marred by injuries to both players, with Williams suffering from a blistered foot and Jankovic going down with a recurrence of a thigh injury.
After the clash Jankovic revealed her delight at claiming the scalp of the former champion. She said: "It was an unbelievable match, I am still shaking."
"It's amazing to beat the defending champion and a champion like Serena, it doesn't happen every day.
She added: "Getting revenge for last year feels so good and I am so happy to be in the semi-final, having no expectations, having injuries, and not really thinking that I can go far."
Meanwhile, 13/8 favourite Justine Henin faces Maria Sharapova in the quarter-final, with the winner facing Jankovic in the semi-final.
