Federer Triumph Shortens Australian Open Odds
Wednesday 23 January 2008 at 13:30 Switzerland's Roger Federer brushed aside James Blake to gain a place in the Australian Open semi-final and shorten his odds of tournament victory.
The dominant world number one was already odds-on favourite to win the tournament and is now rated at 4/7 with Blue Square to retain the title.
At his brilliant best in patches throughout the game Federer was able to record a straight sets 7-5, 7-6, 6-4 victory over his spirited American counterpart.
And seeing his semi-final opponent just below his usual imperious form, Novak Djokovic claimed that his victory over David Ferrer in the last round might give him enough momentum to beat Federer to gain a place in the final.
He said: "So far I've been performing very good tennis. I have a very difficult opponent in David Ferrer, the guy I lost to in the Masters Cup," Djokovic said.
"He doesn't have anything to lose here. He's been playing some amazing tennis. It's going to be a tough match for me, so we'll see what happens."
Meanwhile, Djokovic is priced at 10/3 with Ladbrokes to win the Australian Open.
