Trapattoni Ireland Manager Odds Shorten After Board Meeting
Wednesday 13 February 2008 at 09:21 Giovanni Trapattoni looks set to be named as the next boss of the Republic of Ireland today (February 13th).
The Football Association of Ireland could finally name their successor to Steve Staunton as early as this afternoon, with Trapattoni now poised as the 1/33 favourite to take up the position.
And Johnny Giles, who managed Ireland in the 1970s, revealed his belief that the 68-year-old Italian would be perfect for the job.
"You always hope you get someone like that," he said. "At the start of the process Trapattoni didn't seem to be in the frame at all, but I think it's great he's come in late and all's well that ends well."
He added: "He's an experienced man and he's been a great manager over the years, and hopefully he'll be a great manager for us now."
Former frontrunner for the post Terry Venables is now rated at 6/1 to succeed Steve Staunton.
