Newcastle Face Birmingham In Crucial Premier League Clash
Monday 17 March 2008 at 12:06
Newcastle United face Birmingham City tonight (March 17th) in a match that could be pivotal to the Premier League survival of both clubs.
The Magpies have failed to win a game since Kevin Keegan replaced Sam Allardyce as manager in January, and are priced at 2/1 with Bet Direct to win this evening's game at St Andrews. Birmingham are 11/10 favourites with BetFred. The importance of the occasion has not been lost on Newcastle 'keeper Steve Harper, who claims the match could be one of the most important in the club's history.
"The next two fixtures, this one and the one against Fulham, are the biggest in our recent history," he said.
"We have got to get a minimum of four points from them. We cannot afford to lose either of them."
Harper added: "We looked at the situation this week - the teams around us, where we stand and what we have to do over the next nine games.
"There are nine teams down there with a chance of going down and, unfortunately, we are one of them."
Meanwhile, Michael Owen is the favourite to open the scoring in this evening's game, priced at 11/2 with Paddy Power.
